Got a bug in my butt to dig up a new ROM for the trusty XT912 earlier this evening after updating my Galaxy tablet to Lollipop.  Found a Cyanogen 5.1.1 CDMA ROM (CM12) and updated Safestrap to 3.7.5.  I did a full backup (system, data and secure) via Safestrap to the external SD card and moved that to my PC.

I created the new boot slot and installed CM12 successfully along with Google apps for 5.1.1.  I booted into recovery mode and restored the data from my backup. All my apps, wallpapers, widgets came back ok, but none of my pictures, SMS messaging, music etc did.  I'm not concerned because they're still in the Stock ROM slot (That's Jellybean 4.1.2 if it matters) and I can boot between the two just fine...

I'm not sure what the secure and system portions of the backup contain, but logic tells me I probably will break something if I restore the system stuff.  Anyone know what's contained in the secure "section"?

I'm not completely sold on the new ROM so may switch back and forth over the next few days so here come the (potentially) stupid questions:

Is there a way to keep contacts, messages, pictures, music, etc. "synced" between ROMs?  (i.e. get each one to "point" to the same folders/data) or are these partitions completely separate?

I looked for some info on how safestrap creates its file structure in hopes I could just copy data over with a root enabled file utility, but am striking out (It being after 2am isn't helping my focus any)  Can someone point me in the right direction?

This is the first time I've really messed with multiple ROMs under Safestrap.  Is there a "manual" somewhere?  The places I found to download it don't have much more than some very cursory information...

Thx!

Well, this may all be moot.  Woke up an hour or so ago to find the phone dead and now it's hanging and rebooting every few minutes - seemingly since I installed Verizon Cloud and tried to restore my contacts and messages to the custom ROM config...

Hope I can eventually get back into recovery and activate my Jellybean setup...

Would still like to get this new ROM (or some other Lollipop variation) working 'cuz I'm liking it on my tablet..

Unfortunately, this forum has been quiet here since Jellybean. The best place for questions and answers for this phone (which I still use..) is at XDA.... Contacts should "sync" between ROMs through your Google account. I have all pictures stored in Google Photos (and I keep them on my SD card as well) so they also sync, as does my music. Since your phone is rooted, you could always use Titanium Backup to restore everything.

Also, there is no such thing as a stupid question. All the info and "manuals" for safestrap is on XDA as well. Head there, and you can find ROMs for this phone. Liquid Smooth has a nice Lollipop version as well.

Yeah, this phone is pretty old, but it's going to stick around since changing will kill my unlimited data with Verizon.  (Of course, I could pay full retail on a new phone, but I can think of better things to spend that kind of money on.  <grin>)

Unfortunately, I don't keep my contacts etc synced with Google.  I use Verizon's services and so far, that hasn't let me down.

The post on XDA about CM12 on this device specifically stated to NOT restore with Titanium Backup which I found odd because I've been using TB for several years with no issues and several ROM "upgrades".

Phone is definitely not liking CM12 or Gapps.  I keep getting a message that Maps is requesting an application be updated and then when I clear that message, I get another that says there's a problem with gapps.  This cycle repeats every 10 mins or so, no matter how many times I kill the maps process.  Disabling Maps doesn't stop it either.

Having Play Services issues on the tablet now as well....

Will head over to XDA for more "research".

Thx.

From phone or pc? I always had issues registering with phone or tablet. Used pc to register, then I use Tapatalk to do everything else.
