Thank goodness, my power and volume buttons are back :-)
Now I guess my question is, is there any way to undo the root access, if I don't need it anymore?

If you ended up loading the JB update through stock recovery you should not have root access anymore.

PM sent as to not clog up this thread with links to other root exploits. That only adds confusion.

First time rooter here... I want to do a FDR on my Razr Maxx as the performance of my phone since I got the JB update has really been in the toilet. I wanted to use TiBu to back up my apps, etc., but I know TiBu requires root so that's where this guide comes in. I downloaded the files and ran them with only one minor issue... my SmartActions was unmodified and I had to make a change to one of the options in the SmartActions BatterySaver for the "Save" button to light up. Once I did that, everything proceeded as normal and I now (supposedly) have root. Is there any way for me to verify root access? Thanks again everyone... it was quick and painless!
Any app that needs root can tell you like TiBu. Or you can get Root Checker

Yup, about 15 seconds after posting I downloaded TiBu and it confirmed my root. Sweet! Gonna buy the full version and just do the "easy" mode and have it back up all apps and system settings. FDR, here I come! Thanks again everyone!

Do not restore System apps or data, unless you want to break stuff
Generally we recommend only restoring User Apps

I was going to back up system apps/data because I have a lot of custom contact pictures and I really didn't want to go through the pain of assigning a picture to each and every one again. It's not a dealbreaker by any means but just trying to make my life easier. Do I not want to do that? In other words, backing up the system data won't backup the contact pics?

I believe it does, but restoring data often goofs stuff up. If you really need to do that, then I would restore one thing at a time, and maybe do a reboot with a wipe cache. If you start having issue though, it may be because of that.

Restoring Data does cause problems sooner than later...including System tooI believe it does, but restoring data often goofs stuff up. Thanks guys. I backed up my apps and I also backed up the system data.... just in case. My pictures and music are on my SD Card and my contacts are backed up to Google of course. I used the Pro version of Tibu (first-time user) to do so. I'm about to boot into recovery and do a FDR. Once that's done I will root, install TiBu, and restore my apps and should be good to go. Thanks again for the help; this site is great. Will report back in a bit!

Done! I booted into Recovery, wiped the cache partition, and did a FDR. First thing I did was root, install TiBu, and restored my apps. It worked perfectly!! TiBu was totally, TOTALLY worth the $6.50 for the full version. The only system data I restored was the SMS list and my Contacts. I did NOT restore the apps; only the data. It brought back everything, just as I left it. I'm sorry I was so late to the party, but wow, it was so easy! Thanks so much to Dan/djrbliss for the root method!
I even used TiBu to freeze a lot of bloat which always makes me happy.
The whole point of this was to help performance of the phone, which was terrible. It's still a little sluggish but it's much, much better than before. And now that I know what I'm doing - scary thought, I know - I can backup and FDR any time I want. Thanks again everyone for the advice and guidance!
