I would also try a different USB port if you haven't already.Untick and retick USB debugging. If that doesn't help reboot PC and phone. Lastly if those don't work try a factory data reset.

Of course i did...
No encryption running... but thanks...
I wiped the phone again... put still the same error
I can't choose the connection mode on my device since I installed JB.... so I'm not sure if the phone is running MTP mode... SD-Card is mounted on the phone I cannot access it from my computer....
Probably that is the issue...

Worked the first try after ota update to 98.72.16, and I am running Windows 8. Had to let windows 8 setup the drivers, then I disconnected the phone. Reconnected when the pop up asked me what to do with the phone I selected the do nothing. Then it took maybe 8 minutes to root. Thanks Motorola for not messing with that exploit. Thanks developers for such great work.

yep, still worksSo i want to make sure I am understanding everything correctly before I mess up a perfectly good backup phone
I did OTA update on my droid razr yesterday to 98.72.16. Will this exploit work for me? Ideally, i'd like to root so I can debloat, freeze some junk, have a few other features in Tasker, and POSSIBLY go back to ICS (FoxFi wont work since the update. this is very bad for me).
Can I get there from here?

So if I root, there should be no problem getting back my hotspot (somehow) right? Obviously I'm new to this... i rooted the razr that this one replaced last year and it was awesome. so much faster. And probably another n00b question, but this is the FIRST STEP in this process, right? I want to make a backup to restore the phone from in the future (titanium backup), but i have to do this first, right?

I am not sure about hotspot. What do you need a back up for?? I'm confused. This tool will just root and not wipe your data.

I guess I was unclear. I want to make a backup, post root, with all apps, widgets, tasker scripts, settings, etc the way I want them so I can restore from that backup when i inevitably mess something up in the future.
And arent there root-only apps for enabling wifi tethering?

Again, i'm new to this, so bear with me.
1. The exploit is on the kernel? does the kernel dictate cpu speed?
2. After running the exploit, you are able to gain root access which at its core allows you to modify system files? being able to modify these
system files is the key all things non-verizon?
3. are rooting and unlocking the bootloader the same thing?
a. if not, which comes first?
b. if not, can custom roms be used with root and locked bootloader?

... Still no sucess...
Could anyone check which Smart Actions Version is included in the Verizon Version? in EU we got 4.2.2.5.0... maybe we got a newer version?
