Thanks for the info - I updated the previous post - I knew that was something I tried perhaps a year or so ago - did not know if anything had changed..

I recently purchased a Razr Maxx HD. I am currently on version 183.46.15. Unfortunately, I don't have root or an unlocked bootloader. The phone gets very laggy at times, and it gets very annoying to say the least. My question is, can I do a "FULL" flash of this FXZ without bricking my phone? Is a FULL flash the same as resetting the phone? I have done a KEEP DATA flash of this FXZ, but the lag is still there.

You can. A full flash has the erase userdata command in it.

Is there an advantage of doing a FULL flash compared to a phone reset?

It makes no difference at all. erase userdata is erase userdata regardless of how you do it.

So I got this phone a week ago from a friend (I just needed a replacement and couldn't shell out the money for a newer phone--college student, here, no judging) and from what I'm gathering it looks like I got the short end of the stick because without my knowledge he updated before he gave it to me *eye-roll* He's not a techie so he never unlocked/rooted but he must have accepted the OTA.
I'm gathering that this will ultimately mean that I just need to get a new phone eventually, right? I can't believe how unlucky I got because he must have updated the week before I got the phone from him. *sigh*
Random question that I'm guessing is a no... I had a similar situation once with my Droid X and I was able to SBF using a foreign flash and then exploit and upgrade with that (equivalent would be pushing back to .10 where I could use an exploit). I'm assuming nothing exists like that?
I feel like "born loser" quote would be appropriate...

You are correct....NO. If you're on 15 it's unrootable and not unlockable even if it were rootable.

Excuse my ignorance. I currently have 183.46.10 rooted and, I believe, unlocked. Is there a way for me to go to 183.46.15 without loosing root?
I've been putting off the OTA update for weeks, and it's been causing my phone to behave erratically the whole time.

Do not take this update while "believing" you are unlocked. Make damn sure you're unlocked. Check it in AP fastboot mode. Confirm that first.

AP Fastboot says "Device is UNLOCKED, Status Code: 3"
So what's my next step?

Follow the OP. Rooting is done by flashing custom recovery and then flashing supersu in recovery.

I guess that's what I don't understand. The OP doesn't mention flashing custom recovery or getting root back. Do I need to setup custom recovery before using RSD Flasher, or do I do that after using RSD Flasher?

If I understand correctly, I should do this:
1) Flash using RSD to 183.46.15
2) Flash custom recovery, such as TWRP, as detailed in this thread:
3) Use TWRP to regain root
Is that correct? Am I missing anything?

So, I "accidentally" did the ota update this morning and it said an error had occurred so I thought the update didn't work. But, I just checked and it did update and I still have root? Do the KK roms still work? If yes which do you recommend?

You could update from 10 and keep root, but, if you are locked there is no root exploit for 15. If you're unlocked, well, we shouldn't even be having this conversation. As for roms, no idea.

Now, if I'm correct here, flashing the 4.4.2 firmware on an unlocked bootloader will update it to the "kitkat bootloader" that the new moto_msm8960 branch of cyanogenmod requires, right? Regardless I'm gonna have to flash everything anyway, my phone wouldn't turn on its screen this morning when I got up, notification light was flashing, so I restarted it and now it won't make it past the cyanogenmod boot screen. Something's definitely wrong with it, the recovery is giving all kinds of weird errors so I'm just gonna wipe the stupid thing. I'm still running the old branch of cyanogenmod.
