If you're talking the actual RAM it is a very hard process, the RAM pieces are very small and it would also require soldering like Vanten said.

If you're talking about using part of an SD card as RAM, I'm not sure if that is available in Linux/Android like USB drives are with Windows.

Software solutions do exist but it is unlikely the HD would need them

I would do it on any phone I owned if I had the money and knowledge to pull it off.
I have done it to a few phones. i have the skill and knowledge. .but a lot of the times they are so static sensitive without the casing on, that you burn out the mobo before you get the old ram chip off.
also the extra parts are really hard to find unless you know who to tlak to.. and if they dont have a ground lead.. its pretty much pointless to try.. OG droid razr has a 2gb chip available its 90 bucks. and takes about 7 hours if you are really good to pull it off. even then you might zap the mobo or both chips just trying ot get it on..
so only if you are wealthy enouggh to replace the device would you even consider trying.

how many PIN* were there? did u use just an ordinary soldering iron to melt the solder?
the chip itself i havent counted. but enough to make this difficult i use a 0.14 mm tip to do this.. slowly and remove solder with suction it takes time and patients you CAN just replace the RAM chips board on the mobo but thats an extra 80 bucks with the ram. and a much easier install but not worth the near price of the phone.
that being said. up to you if you wanna get that good and try your luck.
