I don't know if you've all seen them, or even heard of them... but you can force your SG3 into download mode using what's called a USB jig. basically, it's a micro USB plug with a resistor wired in that forces the phone into download mode in case of soft bricks.
this will not help you with a hard brick, i.e. the bootloader is messed up. only a board replacement or someone with a JTAG setup can help you with that.

I thought you could still manually put your phone into dl mode with a soft brick?

there can be instances where the 3 button combo is disabled.
