Sam helped me unlock last year when I received my RAZR HD as a warranty replacement for my OG RAZR MAXX. First thing that happened when I fired up my phone and got it activated was it said there was an OTA. I immediately said no and then flew right to these forums to learn the following:
- Should I take the OTA or hold off since it might not allow me to root?
- Was I able to root the phone at all?
- Discovered the possibility to unlock the bootloader.
- Bugged Sam to death (after reading about it) if it was safe and was my version even possible (I was on 9.16 at the time).
Needless to say, within an hour of receiving the phone via FedEx, the phone was rooted and unlocked and I immediately went to getting Eclipse for the phone. Never looked back, never hesitated, never regretted it, especially after the KitKat OTA made such a mess of things for people.
A locked bootloader would have sucked after the KK OTA (that is, until someone discovered that Motorola gave a gift by putting the bootloader exploit back in).
But, I'm glad to see so many other people being given a first (or second) chance to unlock their phones.
