Hi folks,

First off, fantastic forum.  Of course, with so much information, it can be very time consuming to dig for information which i have for the most part.  But, there is some advice that only a response can help with.

I have a XT926 4.1.2  which i've been quite happy with and I have a grandfathered unlimited verizon data plan and an external SD, which I want.  For the most part, it does everything i wanted stock and I use Foxif for tethering and everything is  dandy.  Well, 4.4.2 update came along and I researched and made sure not to update.  I rooted 4.1.2 to avoid my kid from mistakenly hitting "yes" to the update and freeze it.  Now, through the wonders of this informational forum, I have found out that I have the ability to not be locked out of things I so dearly love.  So below, i have questions.

1.  Should I upgrade to 4.4.2, unlock bootloader then go back to 4.1.2 for my hotspotting?

2.  If I go 4.4.2 and unlock and root, will I be able to hotspot or do I need to go back to 4.1.2

3.  Is 4.4.2 really worth updating to if I don't lose functionality?  What am I missing?

3.  Now that the cat is out of the unlock bag, is there custom roms that are worth while and will development start back up on what is considered and obsolite phone?  What about bug lists for roms as when I researched, I noticed some have bugs like loss of sd functionality, camera, wifi and connectivity issues etc.

So folks, what direction should I go?  Thanks for the wealth of information and the continued enjoyment of my XT926

Unlock your phone while you can!!!

I believe there is wifi tether working on KK

People have said KK is a bit faster, better than JB

Just do it...

Roms are a WIP for KK

Yes, tethering is available. I'm like you - I'm grandfathered into the unlimited plan and have been since it went away.

Upgrade to KK, then root, then run motopocalypse and unlock that sucker and then apply the tethering patch for KK which is available from here:

In there, be sure you obtain the 182.46.10tether.zip file which is located here:

Follow his directions after you've upgraded to kit kat, rooted and ran motopocalypse and you'll be golden.

You have to upgrade to Kit Kat in order to unlock your bootloader since the exploit is patched back in via the Kit Kat image.

There is no downside to upgrading and unlocking.  If you decide you despise KK and want to downgrade back to 9.30.1 you can use my RSD Script Generator with the 9.30.1 FXZ and flash the UNIVERSAL script to downgrade. An FDR MAY be required if it bootloops.  Unlocking protects your ability to stay rooted on any new update that may come.  It opens up a world of roms.  It provides you the ability to use custom recovery.  It's been my mission for the past week to make sure everyone has the opportunity to unlock before it's patched away again, so, please, do yourself a favor and unlock while you can.  Those who chose not to last time later regretted it.

I was in the same position as you. Now unlocked, rooted, and have free wifi tether.

After getting back into the rooting game and doing my share of research, I'll be participating in the KK /motopoc/root party as well. Like the op, I too have been grandfathered in with unlimited and have been with the evil empire known as Verizon Wireless since the Bell Atlantic days (yeah... predating myself here), and like to get everything out of my devices I can. I think it would be rather foolish not to.

OMG, welcome me to the dark side.  Had a couple things scare me.  Android guy with ! for a while which self reset after 5 minutes back to 4.2.1 after trying the OTA update.  I followed directions here and things started clicking.  Had to figure out how to unlock dev mode by clicking on, I think, build number a bunch of times until dev options would show.  Then followed directions and ate cake!  Just a little playing around 4.4.2 was much snappier and faster boot wise.  My hotspotting bandwith has almost doubled compared to what it used to be in 4G.

Thanks for the "New" phone guys and thanks for the courtesy you guys have shown to a noob here.  I hope to be around for a while.

:)

Well this is just great! As I was installing the KK update via RSD Lite (v.6.1.6), my phone is now stuck in AP Fastboot mode. I've tried everything that I could find on the subject, and everything is no joy.

Anyone have any ideas as to how I remedy this issue? :/

Patience. It does take a while and seem like nothing is happening. It is pushing a 700 MB file through usb2. I think it was there like 20 minutes and had me a little worried during the process. Make sure you follow those directions perfectly.

Got it (finally). Went through some of my old files and side loaded via RSD. Everything is status quo now.
