hi guys, so i got a replacement razr cuz my screen cracked and im trying to root it with the utility and nothing happens. ive got debugging on, its in mtp mode, nonmarket apps is selected and so is allow mock locations. as soon as i bring up the utility with the choices and select option 2 (root 4.0.4) it just hangs. i know the usb cable is good as when i switch to mass storage mode my sd cards mount. any ideas?

Try switching from mtp to ptp mode. We've seen many phones, for whatever reason, only work in ptp mode.
Also, what type of computer are you running the utility on?

thanks for the response. didnt work either. not sure whats going on. ive used this method before and had no probs. im tempted to do a fastboot and see what happens. any other ideas? ive even tried it on a windows platform and had the same thing. even tried the original rosenberg utility and nothing.

Open a terminal inside the ./files folder and type "adb devices" without quotes and see if your device is recognized by your system

Generally that error is given when either the utility files did not extract correctly, or they were extracted to a different folder after you unzipped them

Oops i lead you astray on the devices. Could you reboot your system first, and then, from the files folder type "adb.osx devices" without quotes. I forgot the difference in the filenames for Mac vs Linux. When/if you get a "waiting for device" error for a long time, toggle MTP and PTP mode. Sorry, Im not at home with my computer and the utility to run. Im doing this from memory on a dirty Windows computer at work!

Chances are if you have tried the windows utility, linuxMac utility and dan rosenburg's..... the issue may lie within the phone itself..... (maybe they corrupted something while 'refurbishing')..... possibly try option 1 and fastboot back to stock.... then try rooting again....thanks for the response. didnt work either. not sure whats going on. ive used this method before and had no probs. im tempted to do a fastboot and see what happens. any other ideas? ive even tried it on a windows platform and had the same thing. even tried the original rosenberg utility and nothing.

Probably doesnt have anything to do with it being refurbished. If the adb commands are not initialising, it seems to be a problem with the utility finding the files and permissions. Could you try running "chmod +x LinuxMacUtility1-82.sh" from within the folder you extracted to, and then re-running the script?

ive already tried that multiple times and had the same results about 'bad commands' and such.

im fastbooting my phone right now and will try to see if i can root....
edit: ok after 15-20 minutes the utility got stuck during the fastboot (see link below)
im now convinced its the phone. im gonna send the phone back and get another replacment.

maybe (just to narrow it down some more) try fastbooting using the windows version? ....... it's worth a shot, at this point....ive already tried that multiple times and had the same results about 'bad commands' and such.
