I was having the same problem as tmyinc.
I tried the install from my Mac and followed all the instructions.
However, during installation, said E: signature verification failed, installation aborted. I tried a few more times, but then gave up and tried rebooting just to have the phone working. Now, I get a black screen. I can still do AP Fastboot and also recovery.

I *was* running 223 from back in July. I'm no phone genius but I managed to get that working just fine with no problems. This time, I can tell I'm now over my head.
I still had that 223 package on my sd card, so I tried installing that. Error was assert failed: Mount ("ext3", "MTD", "system", "/system") Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (Status 7).

So, my plan was to borrow my friends microSD card reader, re-download 246 and 905, stick them on the card, and try again. Any other suggestions?

I can tell you already that the flash step failed and you proceeded on to the apply update step without noticing. It's asserting that the system partition doesn't match which, surprise, is what the flash step is all about. I can't stress enough that people need to pay attention to what's gong on during the process. The "check for errors before continuing" part isn't just hyperbole for amusement. If it fails and you continue on anyway, guess what, the phone no longer works. Redo the flash step and give me the output of it.

SamuriHL, just wanted to say that 8.1 worked just fine for me, my Bionic is at 246 from 232 and that you're awesome.

After HOURS of playing with this I agree that the 905 file load failed but I DO pay attention to the flash but NOTHING errors in the process indicating, at least in my mind that all went well when it doesn't.

That said, 8.1 worked perfectly with my phone but not my wife's. I have used rsd lite for a long time and I am very comfortable using the standalone rsd. But unfortunately when it all went bad there was no way to intercept the problem before the point of no return. I will try 8.2 to fix it and report back.

THANKS Sam for your efforts. Murphys law huh? LOL

Well, the problem is, once you start trying to install 246, FXZ'ing to 905 is going to cause infinitely more problems. Which is what you did in that output you pasted. You're going to have to get 8.2 and follow my instructions in the 8.2 release notes to fix it. If that doesn't work, let me know, but, if it doesn't there's a serious problem. The REINSTALL option is basically the same thing as doing a full FXZ for 246 with the only caveat being that to finish it you have to apply the update in recovery. My guess is the first attempt RSD failed for whatever reason, then the bug in NORSD caused more problems, and then you dd a 905 FXZ FULL which made it even worse. The 8.2 246 REINSTALL *AFTER* doing the repair ap fastboot option should fix it.

I always do, but I like screwing Verizon, so I'm letting google re-sync and download 2GB in apps, and then I'll restore data, I'll be over 20 gigs this month :D:D:d

I was just trying to help kach474. I personally never had issues with HoB. Always worked flawless for me thanks to Sams hard work. Just thinking the contents of the swdl file would help debug kachs issues to help him out. I

Completely agreed. That's why it's in the part of the OP where it says "how do I ask for help". LOL! :) I can't fix things without the proper info. "I got an error" or "it didn't work" definitely does nothing to help anyone. So I appreciate you asking for them to post more info.

Hello. I have run in to an issue. I was running 232 on my bionic and with the release of the update I used this thread to try and upgrade to 246. I have read it and the FAQ several times prior to trying it (not saying I didnt miss something). I downloaded all the required items. I choose the first option to on the first screen and then the first on teh second (install 246). Installed update to sd-ext card manully and followed all steps up to installing the update. It continued but errored at that point. Aborted error in sideload package. Now the phone will not boot. Wont boot into anything but AP fast boot. I tried to reinstall and repair with no luck. Any help would be appreciated. I am sure it was something I did wrong. Thanks again.

This is a different problem. The "copied update to the sdcard-ext manually" part is what concerns me. You're going to have to pull the sdcard from the phone and recopy the update to it. Manually verify the md5 this time. It very likely didn't copy correctly. You'll need another phone or sdcard reader to get the update on there. Once it's there correctly, boot into recovery and apply the update. If it fails again, I need the whole error 7 message.

(And yes, I still wanna see the swdl.txt file output)

Ok, recopying the files over, and then listening to what you told me to do, i.e. redoing the flash step, solved my problems. Thanks for your patience.

I think I already know the answer to this question, but will ask it anyway. I did a FDR on the phone before installing. I had my external sd card encrypted. I assume I cannot recover those encrypted items now. Can I just format it like any other external drive I plug into USB on my computer?
