WARNING:  If you get prompted for an update (I know, right?) DO NOT take it.  You will lose root and probably lose SafeStrap ability...FOREVER.  You have been warned. DO NOT take any OTA updates if you care about root and safestrap!!!!!!

Hardly. Many of us are abandoning vzw so we may continue to use our phone the way we want. I'm on an s4 gpe on at&t. Fully unlocked and easily rooted.

Everyone can thank Hashcode for this one.  He posted it on Twitter.  I guess all the OMAP phones are going to see a security update.  My gut feeling is this can only be related to the master key crap.

Thanks for HOB, I've used it on two of my bionics and everything went smooth. I seem to have missed something on the third ( I got it with 5.9.905 ) hw B . But if I tired to goto recovery i just got a dead android laying down and then it would boot up normal. So I searched and thought that if I flashed 246 FXZ it would wipe everything and be good to go. Everything flashed fine and 246 boots no prob, but still cant get into recovery. So I rooted and still good. But I'm setting it up on Page Plus for my step father, and need to do a factory wipe. But still cant get into recovery, I know it has to be something simple that I'm missing but I can't seem to catch it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I just bought this phone and it was supposed to be a refurb. So, I don't know if it may have had JB on it and they went back to ICS or what could of happened to recovery. Thanks in advance for any help.  Billy

LOL I don't know what just happened but it started working. I guess I scared it enough telling it that I would throw it in the burn pile and watch it burn. I still dont know what if anything changed but Ill do some poking around and see if I can figure it out and post back. Thanks

When you get the dead android have you tried pushing both volume buttons at the same time?

Yeah when you get to the android icon, hold volume down and press volume up. Once the menu comes up, use the volume keys to move and power button to select.

Not that this does us any good at this point, but, my new found hobby of hacking around with my S4 GPE led me to some interesting knowledge that I thought I'd share with the class.  Back in the days when we were getting ICS leaks left and right, the HoB served as a mini-FXZ.  One of the things I'd do is root and extract recovery.img from the recovery partition.  I even put that functionality into the HoB.  So back to the S4 experience.  The latest OTA update came out for 4.3.  A lot of us like to install TWRP recovery but we need stock recovery so we can flash the next OTA update.  Well, one of our root methods is to install TWRP and flash supersu in recovery.  But flashing TWRP overwrites the stock recovery partition.  Bummer man.  So I ripped the update zip apart and discovered that I could create a signed recovery.img file from the update.  Now back to the Bionic.  I looked at one of the Bionic updates and found that the same process can be done to create a recovery.img that can be flashed.  Pretty wicked.  No need to be rooted to pull it and still be able to make a mini-FXZ from any update.

So you are saying even after another potential ota, we'd still be able to root?

No, what I'm saying is that I can make a recovery.img until we get the FXZ and be able to restore a phone to working order for anyone who fracks it up.  :)

Awesome find. I just upgraded to the s4 as well and so I decided to factory wipe my bionic with the potential sell it and now it won't even turn on lol so I might have to try the hob and see if I can get it back up and running to at least use as a back up...

I have to say Samuri most guys when they get a new phone abandon their work on the old one and put all their efforts in the the new phone.  Thanks for not forgetting about us I know you have a great deal of blood sweat and tears and probably some more blood in there creating the HOB and it keeps you going but it is appreciated.  It is funny the other day I was thinking I really don't need the HoB any more my phone is set up no more updates and BAMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.  Fracked it up trying to install a 4.2.2 rom in the stock slot instead of a 4.1.2 well lost root and God knows what else fubared and had to FXZ yada yada yada. The HoB was like a good old friend I hadn't seen in a while sure I was a little embarrassed to call after all this time and ask it to do some heavily lifting.  But guess what he said no problem I got this, that is a true friend :)

I tried really hard to make the HoB into something that is self sustaining so I don't have to put a lot of work into it.  "It just works".  There are still many many people using it.  And I'm still around if something does come up.  Hell, I spent all last night working on root for the RAZR HD and RAZR M phones and released a new motochopper for each. I don't even own an M and my HD is only used to help develop utilities for that group of users.  The past couple weeks have been spent getting a crash course in all things Samsung, though.  ODIN, heimdall, etc.  I had to learn how to create a proper stock recovery img.  I had to create proper baseband files so those who took the 4.3 leak could get themselves up to an official build.  It's been a fun learning process and I've helped the S4 community in the process.  That is what I love...someone learning new things and applying that knowledge for the benefit of others.  We have a great little S4 community and it's now picking up since we banded together to come up with ODIN flashable files for 4.2.2 and 4.3 so people can play a bit more.  Anyway, I'm glad the HoB was there to help you out of a jam.  Enjoy!

Hi,

I'm new to Bionc.

I got a used Bionic from ebay.  It came with 246 and had the baseband unknown.

I belive someone didn't flash this phone properly and the phone would reboot itself about every 2 minutes.

I tried flashing this phone to 98.72.22_fxz.

During flashing, it had problems with flashing vendor.img.

I got en error saying "unable to allocate 1397489664 bytes"

After the the 98.72.22_fxz flash, the baseband unknown and rebooting every 2 minutes didn't go away.

I tried to do update from recovery, but I get an error on bp.imp.  Something like assertion failed.

Can anyone help!?!

I don't know why the baseband is unknown...seem slike the radio.img was flashed ok when hob was running.

Thanks!
