Just an update, another one that kept root. I followed this plan:

1) FXZ to .246 using HOB

2) Use HOB to root Bionic again

3) Double checked that su binaries were updated

3) "Protect Root" with OTA Rootkeeper

4) Download Safestrap 3.11 and leave it be; do not install recovery

5) Go to Superuser and press "OTA Survival"

5.5) Note: I did not temp unroot. Played with it earlier and it seemed flaky, so I left it rooted.

5) Install JB update

6) Go to OTA RootKeeper when JB is done installing and press "Restore root"

It took some time for this to actually settle in and work, not really sure why.

I then installed Safestrap, backed up the stock slot, made a new slot 2 and restored the backup there. Now running the stock rom in Slot 2 leaving the stock partition alone for now.

Anybody know if most custom roms should run OK with the JB update installed or should we wait for them to be updated (if they ever are)?

My plan was simple.

Back in Feb I FXZ'd via HoB to stock .246, then rooted (using Koush's superuser.apk and su binary) also using HoB.

I manually disabled a few apps, and used the system to disable a few more.

I used the phone through Thursday with no ill effects, and not too many apps in place.

When I got the OTA notification, I told it to install later, then went into the Superuser app to make sure that my su binary was updated, then went into VooDoo to delete the existing su backup, then recreated the su backup, then rebooted and took the OTA.

root was preserved, and I was able to restore it with no issues.

I neither 1) unrooted, nor 2) unfroze my bloat.

These are pretty much the same experiences I had with running the root exploit via HoB .....tried it 3 times with the same result. Verify root good, voodoo says protected, temp unroot with voodoo, root's gone and won't restore. X3. Uninstalled voodoo on 4th try, ran standalone razr's edge verified root good, installed supersu and voodoo, updated binary for supersu pro and set survival mode and backed it up with voodoo, temp unrooted checked root gone, rerooted verified root good, temp unrooted ran JB update, rerooted in voodoo, checked root good, verified supersu survival....all good. The keep data HoB fixed the radio bug that I created when I "fixed" the unbroken radio, that sure does seem to be a mad robust CDMA radio though.

Man, what a PIA this stuff is! I've been messing with this since 7:30 this morning trying to verify that root was going to (hopefully) survive the JB experience. I've tried all the steps Sam has posted and even updated using V10 of HoB and everytime I would do the "temp" unroot procedure, it would never come back. Finally I did the steps that altspeed performed and all indications are that things should be ok. I'm also getting tired of the stupid phone trying to download the update even when I don't want it to. I've had to turn off both wireless and mobile data (and delete the download file) multiple times to keep this POS from installing and rebooting. Now I have to let the battery charge back up before I make the (forced) plunge to JB. I don't think I have enough JD or Merlot in the house for this last step and will probably head out to the store to stock up on both! Wish me luck!

I had my friend freeze updater in tibu and reboot phone. He said that got rid of the notification. It had downloaded though. Not sure if that can help your situation.

Sent from my XT875 using Tapatalk 2

After it downloads it asks you if you want to install the update or install it later. I just used install later every time it asked. When I was finally ready, it was already downloaded, so I went to check for updates, it asked and I pressed Install.

Go into /system/cache and delete it - as long as you are rooted

IIRC, formatting /cache in a non-stock recovery should work - but I may be wrong. I didn't bother t olook where it was stored this time.

WARNING: IF you already FXZ'd OR took the JB update, you can SKIP THIS POST AS IT DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU.

Alright, so, here's some new info brought to you by timmy10shoes....

IF you are on stock 246 ICS, don't care about root (for now), and want to "try" jb before you buy, there is now a way to upgrade WITHOUT locking you into JB. With this method, you will be able to downgrade back to ICS (although keeping your data is probably not going to happen...at least you can get back to ICS if you choose).

WARNING: Failure to follow these steps EXACTLY will cause you all KINDS of problems that *I WILL NOT HELP YOU WITH*. Use at your OWN RISK.

o) Grab the cdt.bin from the 246 FXZ and set it aside. Make SURE you grab the right file. This is absolutely critical and your failure to do so will be the make or break point as to whether you can downgrade or not. DO NOT SCREW THIS PART UP.

o) Remove the 246_FXZ from the House of Bionic (HINT rename it to 246_xxx)

o) Install the 98.72.22_FXZ to the House of Bionic

o) Replace the cdt.bin in the 98.72.22_FXZ with the file you set aside from the 246_FXZ. Again, DO NOT SCREW THIS PART UP or you will NOT be able to downgrade!

o) Use the FXZ Keep Data option

Enjoy JB.

To downgrade, remove the 22 FXZ from the HoB and replace it with the 246 FXZ and do a FULL. Trying to Keep Data will likely result in a boot loop.

I take NO responsibility if this screws up your phone.

well i've had a fun night...stupid external battery charger sucks and didn't charge the whole night so i spend another few hours on a different outlet to get the JB FXZ going...lo and behold the battery reported low on the very last step..since it was radio i stupidly used the repair radio option instead of getting the img from the JB FXZ so it flashed the JB FXZ almost completely but loaded 886 radio. for what it's worth it booted and connected, just 3g only. Now flashing the JB radio img and rebooting but as I've already lost root it feels like a pointless exercise...FML voodoo reports system supports su backup but none exists, SU app is still installed of course but nothing else checked. Someone kidnap djrbliss :\

So would this also work if you took the update or is there something different between the update and the FXZ I don't know about?

Ok so if i am understanding this right when you do this it is actually booting with 246 cdt and never changing over to 22 cdt which is allowing you the option of going back.

SMH. NO, of course it won't if you took the update. You've already flashed the updated security. I guess I have to add warnings.
