Very good. One last thing if you will. Try this:
adb shell
/system/usr/we-need-root/su-backup
Does that give you a # prompt?

Sam,
I did try V9.9 out yesterday afternoon but wasn't able to post due to power outages and loss of internet here. I did the 246 FXZ (keep data) option successfully but had to use Fastboot instead of RSD due to Windows 8 not liking RSD at all even with the firewall shutdown. The FXZ was successful, rooted via HoB, checked Superuser, both the APK and binary were the latest versions, Voodoo confirmed that I had root and a backup. I ran another test and had Voodoo do a temp unroot and then restore root which failed. I opened the Superuser app and it could not find the binary. I re-rooted again with HoB and tried these steps again with the same result. I have not taken the update but when I got up this morning, it was trying to download the update so I've currently got shutdown and charging. I will scroll back a few pages and try to run the ADB commands and post the results after I get done but wanted to see if there was anything else you want me to check. I may end up installing safestrap or something so that I can keep this thing from trying to pull the update.

Voodoo works for some but not for others. I've yet to figure out why.

I ran back through the same steps you had kerneck run yesterday and they were all successful so I do have root still, just worried about how to protect it. I do have the "ota survival" box checked in Superuser, anything else to check/try?

You used 9.9? And rooted with it? If so there's a few things to check.
o) Is Voodoo installed?
o) Is Superuser installed?
o) Does Voodoo see protected su?
o) What is the output of the following commands:
adb shell ls -l /system/usr/
adb shell ls -l /system/usr/we-need-root
Also, don't install 22 yet. I may have something for you to try.
OK Here is what I did:
- uninstalled safestrap recovery
- uninstalled safestrap app
- FXZ 246 HOB *but* I used keep data option
- Root HOB
Voodoo is installed shows all checks

Not sure this is particularly valid because I realized:
A. I kept data and therefore kept voodoo and su
B. I also had superSu installed and active so I am not sure if the right updated su binary was there or not.
Hopefully this helps someone. I am done for tonight but may try again tomorrow and am willing to do a FDR and try it again if it helps. (I have not installed JB or anything else yet.)
I need one more command run and output:
adb shell su ls -al /system/usr/we-need-root
Once I see that we should be good to go.
Damnit. Try this:
adb shell
su
ls -l /system/usr/we-need-root
root@cdma_targa:/ # ls -l /system/usr/we-need-root
ls -l /system/usr/we-need-root

adb shell

Yep
shell@cdma_targa:/ $ /system/usr/we-need-root/su-backup
/system/usr/we-need-root/su-backup
root@cdma_targa:/ #
these were the steps I was referring to, same results also.

No idea. HoB 9.9 mimics exactly what voodoo does step by step to create the protected backup. I know cause I went and read the Java source code. So if voodoo isn't able to temp unroot and reroot then I don't know what to tell you.

do I need to reboot between the temp unroot and attempt to restore root?

And is there a way to keep this stupid thing from trying to download the update? I've got wifi and mobile data off now but it's still trying.

Would it hurt to try?
