It's been far too long since I've visited over here and the Moot thread with complete udder stupidity. I said udder!

Idea here - upfront ask if assisted operation is wanted - If so, at each prompt have a script open the link to the video in the default browser for that portion, if not it just continues on. This will keep your part to a minimum, allow those who don't want it to skip it, but provide useful info for those that do. This still requires someone to put together the vid pieces, but I still think the rest of us should try to put that together.

I actually have a different idea but equally useful. I'll start working on it maybe tonight if I get a chance. I think it'll be extremely helpful. It would do your idea but slightly differently to what you're envisioning.

The idea I have is a universal "press h" kind of thing that would bring up a context screen for whatever function you're on. It'll take a while to get it fully fleshed out. First pass is to create the infrastructure for all the different screens. On those screens we can then have options to bring up the faq, videos, whatever we want to add, plus the contextual built in help which may be enough to get them through whatever screen they're on. So basically on any screen, before they begin the function for that screen, they can press 'h' to get the contextual help screen. It's a lot of functional work to do it, but, it'd be worth it.

We'll see about version number. This won't be a quick "fix" to the HoB. I'm actually thinking about putting the infrastructure in with "todo" for the text of each help screen and having people run through it to make sure the foundation is working, then we can work on filling in the todo's for actual help text.

You could make the help into a wiki link and let the community populate the wiki, adding screenshots or links to vids for each different help topic.

I thought about that, too, but, I'm not a fan of wikis. I hate them with a passion, tbh. I'd consider it though.

I'd love to make a suggestion, but can't come up with anything better than what has already been posted. If you need testers I'll gladly help out.

You know, that says a lot in itself about the HoB. Hard to improve upon greatness :) .

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of wikis either but they do work for a community based information store (at least as long as someone maintains it and edits out the crap info). Agreed that the HoB is that great that its hard to come up with more improvements!

Right. I think its fine as is but I could see where some folks may feel more comfortable with a step by step tutorial.

Appreciate the compliments. :) But there's ALWAYS room for improvement. Like I said, I'm happy with it for the advanced users who were able to read through the OP and FAQ and get it working. It shouldn't be hard to use. Nonetheless, I want to make it easier for people who aren't sure or comfortable with a step to get more contextual information as it's needed.

I really liked this idea. make it available to those that want it, with the ability to bypass it for those that don't.

Trust me the way I do it will be just as unobtrusive to those that don't need it. It's THE reason I haven't added poop like that already. Most people read the OP, read the FAQ, and have at it. They don't need help screens cluttering up the interface. However, some people might need a little extra assistance. I don't like the idea of setting it once at the beginning. The people I'm trying to help are the ones who rush in thinking they know wtf they're doing and then get stuck and panic. They'll be the idiots to turn off help mode in the beginning thinking they don't need it and then frantically PM me until I respond with "I'm stuck on step X and don't know what to do and I need my phone urgently OMGZ PONIES!". I want them to be able to press a key on that screen that'll bring them to the help screen they need. For those that really don't need help, if you never press the help button, the help poop will stay right the bleep out of your way. :)

We'll see when we get further into this project. I haven't even started coding yet. I don't know if I'll start on it tonight or not. I had a long day at work.

Believe me, tonight has proven without ANY doubt that videos, tutorials, and a hand of God reaching through the ethernet cable and pressing all the right buttons for them are needed.
