So there's information out that we may see JB loving (I.E. leaks) within 6 or 7 weeks on Bionic. I want to make sure the House is in order for our new guest to arrive. We have a few weeks of preparation time. Here's my goal....I want people to be able to use the HoB successfully to play with the leaks. BUT, I don't want to have to spend every waking moment of my life supporting it. So I'm looking for ideas/feedback/etc that will make the HoB easier for new users to adopt without causing me a massive headache in support. I'm not really willing to do videos as I don't have the time or patience for it, but, if someone wants to volunteer to create and post some video tutorials for the most common things a user needs to know that'd be helpful. I want to write some step by step tutorials for the functionality, as well, so I'll work on that over the next few weeks. The idea is to take so called n00bs and give them the knowledge to be able to safely use the HoB without inundating me with nonstop support nightmares. Any ideas that will make that easier on me and and the community will be welcome. I can't promise I'll implement every idea but I'm certainly open to suggestions and welcome community input and help on this stuff. My reason for the big warnings right now is simply to save myself from the myriad of pm's I get when leaks are in full force. I want people to be able to safely enjoy them, but, we need users to get to a certain level of knowledge to become self sufficient on this stuff. Thanks for any ideas you may have!

Well I think hob is great the way it is now, and I think you're right by typing a tutorial for adding leaks, adding fxz, General use, fix common issues should they arise. And I'd add screen shots showing the proper folder layout.

ICS - eclipse - CM10 depending on my mood.

Yea, that was the idea I was going for with a tutorial. I mean I've laid it all out there in the OP and the FAQ, but, sometimes people need a step by step guide. Generally speaking, I've not wanted to deal with that level of support and have created a barrier of entry to at least being able to follow the OP and FAQ. The question is how to get people to the level of knowledge and comfort so that they can successfully be able to do that. I don't expect everyone to become experts on every little detail. But I do expect that they know enough that if something goes wrong, they should be able to troubleshoot it and either figure out a fix or be competent enough to provide enough information for someone to be able to help them. "It didn't work" posts get ignored by me because if I responded it would only to be to rip them a new one. (And that's not unique to the HoB....I'm the same way in the HTPC world....Useless reports waste everyone's time and will NEVER lead to a successful fix....only teeth pulling to get the info required to help which I'm not going to do). Basically what I'm looking for is how do we train users to become productive HoB users. Even if it's pointing them to established information about things like moto-fastboot, adb, installing drivers, common problems, etc. I want to be able to provide n00bs with the resources to become proficient enough to become HoB users.

You know, it would only be right if all of us here took one aspect of the HoB and created a Vid for it and you just compile them since we all benefitted from it, but not everyone has that ability. Just a thought.

That'd be great. Volunteers are welcome. :) That's what I'm getting at. I want this aspect to be community sourced. I hinted at this about a month ago that the next big thing for the HoB would involve the community. This is what I had in mind. I want to be able to help more people be able to use the HoB without driving myself insane trying to support them. I'm thinking if people see it in a video they may start to get more comfortable with the idea and not freak out about every little thing. You know..."I downloaded the install.....now what do I do" kind of poop. I mean, seriously? You know, maybe install it? :D But if people could watch a video of someone downloading the components, installing it, creating the 246_FXZ dir, moving the zip into it, running the HoB and configuring it the first time, etc that'd be extremely helpful. Someone else can make a video of how to download a leak, create a "248" directory, add the leak, and run HoB to create the supporting boot.img file for it. All that kind of stuff would be great to have videos for. I'll make the tutorials for them and even do some screen shots, but, a video really drives the point across.

A noobie watching a video of how to do it would be successful at getting it done on there own, like i said before some people cant comprehend what they read as well as watching a video and doing it.

Thanks Droidrzr for the continued support of my family and a special thank you to Kaos and Kelly....

Yea I'm all for it. I've also said many times I'm not going to be the one making them. But I'd certainly put the links up to them if someone gets around to making one. I think it'd be a great help.

I've used HOB successfully three times now without any problems, but as a "noob", to have the knowledge of setting up the leaks for HOB on my own with the tutorial would be fantastic. I think this would help fellow "noobs" a great deal.

To be fair, setting up a leak is really simple. I tried to make it as easy as possible. Here we'll have a quick lesson that can later become part of the tutorial. Let's say a working 6.8.248 build is leaked. (that'll in reality be our engineering build I'm waiting for but the version doesn't matter for the lesson). I won't be making installer packages for future updates. So you'll have to acquire the leak first. That part will be easy. Whoever finds it will post a thread for it here on droidrzr. It'd be very difficult to miss. Once the leak is posted you'll perform the following steps.

O) download the leak
O) Add the version to the end of the file name.
O) Create a 248 directory in you HoB install directory
O) drop the update in the 248 directory
O) Connect your phone to usb
O) Run the HouseOfBionic.bat

That's it. The HoB script will detect the update and prompt you to add support for it. Follow the on screen directions and when the HoB menu comes up, there'll be a new option for your update.

Note: When I say add the version to the filename I'm talking about the naming convention I use... So at the end of the Blur_Version zip file you'd add (68248) before the zip extension. Very simple.

Although I wasn't a complete noob before I used HoB, I am a fan of the "simpler" automated tools like yours. I easily went from .232 to .244, .246, .247, and back to .246. I just had to keep up with your downloads. Over time you've made it clear in the HoB which steps are optional. Honestly if someone can't follow your instructions to download a leak, make a new folder, and rename the file I'm not sure they have a right to root their tool and mess things up that badly. On the other hand you have plenty of tools to help them get out of a jam if they get stuck.

I guess my first thought would be if you could include FAQ options in each section, so before I hit 'y' or 'n' to perform the step, maybe I could hit 'q' and it would bring up the FAQ related to that step. It would be like that last feelgood step before someone actually takes the action. Another option could be to add the FAQ to the HoB with each update (to the HoB, not the FAQ) and it would always be there for people to see. So in the first menu you could have item 'q) Read the FAQ'.

You mentioned wanting to share the knowledge about what it means to root, install a leak, etc. Have you thought about a brief description when someone enters that part of the tool? For example if I select the menu option to root, don't just bring up the screen that basically says "let's do this", but has a short description like, "Rooting your phone will give you access to system files that if modified may prevent your phone from booting and/or void your warranty. Are you sure you want to do this? (y/n/q)". The FAQ option could bring up a more detailed description. It's also that one last pause for someone that isn't sure to read more information. The rest of us will just hit 'y' and jump in head first without reading!

I'm sure you've had many of the same ideas. I don't want to suggest more work for you as you've developed a great tool that I truly appreciate for the Bionic.
Just having fun with Android!

@csantarcangelo

I did think about how to integrate help directly into the script, but, I never could come up with a useful way to help those that need it but not annoy those who don't. I think I have a good idea now on how to go about it. It'd require a fairly lengthy rewrite on my part, but, I think in the end it'd be worth it. I had included the FAQ and OP as html files as sort of a step in that direction. However, I have a better idea now. Something similar to what you're suggesting only better. Thanks for the ideas!

That was the idea. I want people to be knowledeable so they know what's going on under the covers. This helps them not panic when something goes wrong. I've found that panicking people are the ones that most annoy me cause they're not thinking clearly when they post for help. They leave stuff out that they've done, don't fully describe the problem (if at all), etc. But in the end, when they do go to use the tool, I want it to be as easy as I can possibly make it. I think I've gotten to that point with the current script. I mean, seriously, if people can't figure out how to download a file, create a new directory, add a version number to the file, and copying it into the new directory, well, perhaps they really shouldn't be installing a leak. That's not a dis on anyone....it's just that there has to be a certain level of skill required before playing with leaks is considered "safe". I use that word VERY loosely because any time you're not on the OTA it's not ever SAFE. But, being able to get back to the OTA or fix a problem if something goes wrong...that's the level of experience I want my users to have.

Idea here - upfront ask if assisted operation is wanted - If so, at each prompt have a script open the link to the video in the default browser for that portion, if not it just continues on. This will keep your part to a minimum, allow those who don't want it to skip it, but provide useful info for those that do. This still requires someone to put together the vid pieces, but I still think the rest of us should try to put that together.
