I'll try but my sim reader is borked and my HD was factory reset. I was able to bypass setup so hopefully it will go through in WiFi only

That would be helpful if you could pull it. I want to know what we're up against.

I still need handholding before attempting to unlock the bootloader and root my Razr Maxx HD w/ KK. The programs mentioned and how to run them are all new to me: towel root app, make it rain button, install motoacpocalypse (how?), install supersu, update binaries (how?)
I'd love to be able to do this before it's too late, but I need a clearer understanding of exactly what to do.
Also, will my apps and data remain intact or do I have to back up my date and reinstall he apps? Is any of this done on my computer with the phone plugged in, or is it all done on the phone?
My ignorance in all this is dismal and I'd be very grateful for a quick tutorial. Someone pls walk me thru this step by step in the safest way possible before Big Red forces an OTA on innocent people like myself. :
Thanks in advance...

Yea, I mean I don't do that kind of hand holding. I don't think you understand how many users I deal with on a daily basis. I've made this process as easy as I possibly can short of someone doing it for you. None of this is done with a PC if you do it right. You will not lose data. It will either work, or it won't. It won't brick or do anything if it doesn't work.
Enable Unknown Sources on your phone:
Download towel root from your phone and install it:
(Click on the lambda symbol to start the download)
Download the motoapocalypse app from your phone and install it:
Open the motoapocalypse app and let it run to unlock
Install SuperSU from the play store, run it, and when it prompts you about updating the binary, tell it yes.
I mean, this is literally as simple as it can possibly be. The whole process should take you 5 minutes at most. If you know how to download, install, and run apps it should take less than a minute.

I looked for towel root, motoacpocalypse, etc. and couldn't find them, in the google play store at least. All this may seem simple to most here, but still Greek to me. A lot to try to learn in a very short time. :

towelroot and motopocalypse are apps created by developers for unlocking/rooting your mobiles, so they will not be available on play store.I looked for towel root, motoacpocalypse, etc. and couldn't find them, in the google play store at least. OK got it. Ran the Towel download. All my AV stuff -- Avast, Lookout -- screamed warnings. I assume it was ok to ignore as I did. Then ran the motoacpocalypse download. Rebooted and installed SuperSu. Installation reported as successful. Rebooted again on prompt. Everything looks good -- i.e. just like before. I assume I'm now rooted? (Don't know how to test for that yet, but assume so since everything worked exactly like you said so far!)
Are there any security issues to watch for or do I just proceed as before except now I have access to rooted aps?
Also, I assume that from now on, I should not accept any more OTA updates from the carrier?
Many, Many thanks for your help!!! Greatly appreciated!

I cannot believe that you missed it... I bet you didn't even read all the way to the end of the tread.... Look at the post above yours and put palm to face.

Alright, that's a great improvement. If you unlocked successfully, you don't have anything to fear from future OTA's as you can just install custom recovery and flash supersu to regain root. You can reboot into AP Fastboot mode (power off the phone, hold volume down, press power) and it should give a device status of 0 or 3. If it's 3 you're golden and unlocked and congrats are in order. If it's 0, we have more work to do. Let us know either way.

He said he ran motoapocalypse so it should be unlocked. Hence my response on how to verify.

Yep, got a 3. Unlocked! Many of my installed apps followed suit asking for root permission when I opened them. Thanks again!
Now to learn about using TWRP by looking in up online. Again, thanks for kick-starting my 75-yr-old rear end onto this.

Cosmic radiation.

What that means is that you didn't provide me NEARLY enough information to help you. So my wild ass guess is that cosmic radiation caused it to not work. If you want a more appropriate response that might actually solve the problem, it'd behoove you to provide information like:
What version are you on?
How did you upgrade to said version?
Did you verify that root is working with other apps?
Did you use the motoapocalypse app or PC version?
Did you try the other version to see if it makes any difference?
ETC. I'm not going to play dentist and pull information out of people. If you want your problem fixed, then you'll be properly motivated to provide me with enough information to solve your problem. Otherwise, it demonstrates either extreme laziness or non-commitment. Either way, I'm not going to waste my time on foolish "tried it, didn't work" type posts. This message applies to all who post in this thread or any other that I help people in. I don't mind helping, but, this is not my full time job. So let's not make it harder to help you than it already is.
