do you have to turn on toeowelroot v3 ever time you power on your phone because that is the only way it shows root access.

WiFi Tether does not work on KitKat. There is a work around, do a Google search.

I believe it can be done through an xposed module but I'm not 100% sure.

There is definitely an xposed module but I haven't tried it myself. I definitely saw it in the list though.

Can't comment on the HD/M, but it works fine on my Dev X.

I'm pretty sure I saw in another thread that HD/M users were using it on 183.  So it should work assuming they get their root/unlock issues worked out.  As I said, I can't really help on that front given the lack of information.  It'd be great if everyone did something like:

I was able to install the towelroot app.  When I open the app, I click the make it rain button and ..... <-- fill in the blank happens.  Once root is dealt with:

I was able to install the motoapocalypse app.  When I open it, ..... <-- fill in the blank happens.  When I boot into AP Fastboot mode, it is showing status #.  Where # = 0 or 3 typically.

This is apparently WAY too much to ask of users.  LMAO

There us actually a modified .apk on xda to open up the stock WiFi tether feature, but I am with Sam on this. Google is your friend.....

Root with towel root, unlock the bootloader and then forget towel root forever. If you've been reading this thread, you know SamuriHL has been preaching to everyone that has a locked phone to unlock it now because with the next OTA, it will be gone forever.

Towelroot is for those that don't have an unlocked bootloader - it's an exploit and it will  be patched in the next release as that has been confirmed with other phones that are on 4.4.3 and 4.4.4. Unlock your bootloader (after using Towelroot) and you never have to worry about root exploits ever again.

Towel root is needed to root 4.4.2 183 in order to run the unlock.

I have a Motorola Razr Maxx HD 182.46.10.XT926 running Android 4.4.2.  The only tweaks have I ventured to make was to enable Developer Options in order to change the runtime to ART, and change animation and duration scales from 1 to .5

As someone who is interested in being free from carrier constraints, but has never rooted before and is only familiar with the very basics of linux, is rooting something I should attempt or is it too risky to possibly brick the phone?  It would love to have the flexibility it affords and to be able to use Titanium Backup for instance.

I have read the many instructions here but much of the terminology is new to me.  Is there any "cookbook for newbies" receipe that can walk me through this in plain English, including how to safely transfer zipped files between computer (Win 7 Pro) and phone and how to unzip on the phone?   A a FOOLproof step-by-step hand-holding guide???

You need to unlock the bootloader. The instructions are extremely simple and do not involve transferring any zip files to your phone (no idea where you got that from). Install towel root app, press the make it rain button, install motoapocalypse app, run it, and you are then unlocked permanently. Meaning you can do whatever you want with your phone. The risk of bricking from those two things is infinitesimally small. Once you do that, install supersu from the play store to manage root. Please unlock your bootloader. The window of opportunity is closing as we get closer to a new ota.
