I am trying mattlgroff's util and it is hanging at writing modem.  I haven't been able to get out of the fastboot mode due to failed flashes.

Something on your machine is interfering with flashing.  That's about all I can tell you.  You're going to have to do some work to figure out what's going on here. Basically it's just locking up sending the files to be flashed.  That goes back to what I said about port, cable, or driver.  I know you said you've done it before, but, clearly something has changed.

After about 4 hours of sweating about a bricked phone, I switched to the cable for an older moto phone, rebooted into fastboot then reran matt's utility and it worked this time! I should be able to root and unlock from here.  Sam, thanks again for the tips and for being patient with my noobaciousness.  How can we donate to you for all your help?

No donation necessary.  Should have listened to me earlier.  :p  hehehe.  My gut is usually spot on with these things.  However, you should donate to geohot for releasing a root exploit that worked on these phones.  He deserves it.

Lesson learned.  Don't feel bad though.  I don't listen to my wife either, or so she says.

But if you didn't listen to her you wouldn't know she is saying that about you, so....

(That logic always gets me in trouble lmfao)

Is there specific ROMs we must use now? I just tried Carbon ROM and it boot looped... Is there a way to tell if it will be compatible or not?

Since you're on the new kernel, there are VERY few roms that'll work so far.  If you wanna play, downgrade back to 9.30.1 using my UNIVERSAL script, then flash away to your heart's content. Once the roms get updated for the kernel from 4.4.2 then you'll be able to reflash 4.4.2 using my UNIVERSAL script and play again with the new stuff.

I figured it may have to do with the kernel. Ill give your script a shot tomorrow, I'd love to be able to start flashing.

I'm left wondering if just flashing boot right before jumping into recovery and flashing a rom would work. You may want to try it. I really don't know.

That may just work. The new TWRP will backup the boot partition, so you could always just restore a nandroid of the new system of it fails. If it works, you could switch between 4.1.2 roms and 4.2.2 with ease.

It's a theory but it needs to be tested. I don't know enough about it to know if it'll work or not.

And my daughter would string me up if I start flashing her phone. I'm lucky she let me play with it enough to root it and unlock it.

Whenever I try to flash a custom recovery (either TWRP or CWM), it gets stuck on the Moto logo when trying to enter recovery.

It works fine with the stock recovery.

I've also tried bypassing my download manager, to no avail.

Normal boot works fine when recovery is borked like that.

Any help?

Sounds like a corrupt recovery file download or the wrong recovery for your phone.

After about 12 hours of reading, from all the threads I can think of, I'm good!

Moved from a SS 3.63 and Avatar 4.1.2 ROM to a full wipe KK stock. I know I know I didn't need to but coming from SS and DX2 days, just felt better to start squeaky clean.

Unlocked and rooted, thanks for the links along the way.  Very helpful to me.

Followed these strings:

Then of course this OP.

Now what ?!?  LOL, JK

Now looking to get TWRP back on then going to start at CM11 I think and see how we do.
