Ok so I goofed and deleted some apk's without backing them up and now I can't apply the update that is out. Does anyone have a list of the default apk's and backups I could use? Yes I know a noob mistake but I honestly didn't expect any updates to require all default apk's present.

Ok it looks like the only thing I am missing is the Bonus Apps apk.

On a side not did anyone else notice the phone acting weird if they removed the cust.img from the backup folder? My capacitive buttons stopped lighting up and the phone felt a little sluggish.

Ok, after some poking around I found that like I thought the cust.img file loads customized layouts and other things specific to the phone. Have no fear my friends, I have been working pretty hard and found a better solution to customizing the rom. It's a pain in the arse but it works and it's better than just deleting the whole thing.

You will need to be running linux, I used ubuntu 11.04 but this should work on other variations. I also use Root Explorer to brows the filesystem on the phone.

On the phone navigate to .cust_backup/image and copy cust.img to your sdcard
On your linux computer open the root folder then navigate to the /media folder create a folder named cust ("/media/cust")
On your phone enable USB connection and Copy the cust.img file from your sdcard to the root folder of your linux
computer ("/cust.img")
Open terminal in linux and type mount -o loop,rw -t ext4 /cust.img /media/cust If everything went right you should have
a new hdd volume labled cust that you can navigate through with the file explorer
Just delete whatever you don't want on your phone and then copy the cust.img file from your root folder ("/cust.img") back to
your sdcard (you might have to unmount the image first, you can use the disk manager to unmount the "drive")
On your phone Dissable USB connection and copy the new cust.img file from your sdcard to .cust_backup/image/cust.img
i would reccomend saving a copy of any original files you delete or replace on the phone.
Reboot

Has anyone confirmed whether applying the update removes root or not? And also if one has already blown away some of the bloat that was accessible, will this update not install?

I also rm'ed some of the stuff like carrieriq bonus apps and a few others without backing up. Would my only option then be to do a factory reset, re root, and then apply the update?

If you removed the apk like I did there is currently no way to update the current rom. You would need to replace the original apk's into the original directory, if you do a factory reset all it will do is reinstall what you have left since you deleted the original. When I get off of work I will compile a list of apk's I still have and if someone is feeling saucy they can check what they have and see if I am missing anything aside from the bonus apk.

I have already updated both of my phones so i am unable to get these APK's. If anyone has not upgraded your phone here is a list of APK's they need from /system/app.

If you have any of these please post for the users that need them to upgrade.

mattlgroff and jamonthis thanks for all the help I double checked my apps against the list found I was only missing the bonus app apk copied it over and I was golden. My root is still intact as well so we are good, again thanks for all the help and I also made a backup of the current apk's after updating the rom so if someone can suggest a good host site I'll upload them there.

Thanks allot. I probably won't get a chance to try this until maybe Friday. so once i have all of the necessary apk files all i need to do is save the update zip file to my sd card, boot into recovery mode and flash it from there correct? is it necessary to rename it 'update.zip'?

This is not a flashable zip and it won't pass stock recovery signature checks anyway.

This is just a copy of all of the files in the /system/app/ folder. You can use a program like Root Explorer to replace any APKs you debloated/removed.

Ok so the only reason I want this update is because it says it improves camera quality. I assumed it did this by replacing camera firmware or changed some system settings, but you're saying that the update simply consisted of update apk's for /system? It didn't even update the cust.img thing?
Do you know by any chance which apk I need to get the improved camera setings?

Not what I am saying at all...My zip I posted is NOT the update, its the original un-updated system apps. If you want to update then use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to backup root, temp unroot, and then update and restore root.

Right, i know that your zip file isn't the update. I was referring to the update zip file that i posted last week. Since it's no longer in my phones cache folder and i done have the prompt for the update on my phone anymore i was asking if i would be able to add my update zip file to my sd card and update through recovery mode (after doing the ota root keeper and temp unroot)

If i can't update that way do you know of a way for me to get the update prompt back on my phone.

You should be able to name it update.zip and send it through recovery yes. There is another way to update I know of if that doesn't work.

ok everyone. I appear to be running almost a straight android with no bloat. I had removed the cust.img and i am unable to put it back as there is not enough space anymore for me to copy it back. I though i would try a factory reset to free the space and that did not work but has removed all tmobile's bloat. I have also been able to get androids hotspot feature to launch and connect a computer to it. i just cant surf using it yet. Has something to do with DNS and routing still. I am working on this and hop to be able to get a fully clean ROM from this.

My only question is and i do not know enough about recovery to try this. Is there away to replace the recovery.img with one that has CWM on it? I was thinking now that we can remove the cust.img we might be able to get it to work.

When you boot the phone hold down both volume buttons until you reach a pink screen. When plugged into any computer with the drivers installed a mounted USB image will pop-up with 5 partitions including boot.img, cust.img, and recovery.img. This mounted USB image is rewriteable and you can simply copy and paste from it to add/remove files. Be it noted: These are MD5 and or signature checked by the bootloader. If you replace it with CWM recovery.img it will no longer boot until you go back to pink screen mode and replace it with the original image. You can replace cust.img here.
