Thanks for all your work Matt. The first (and only root) for this phone that I've seen plus a handy unroot tool as well. I'm new to android and I'm already liking it more than IOS even though we're stuck with gingerbread for now (although since I'm compltely new to android I have no idea what I'm missing out on with ICS and JB so I think gingerbread is good enough).

On an unrelated note, is there anyway in android to remap the capactive buttons. For instance, if possible I'd like to be able to remap the genius button to something more useful like vlingo (or anything else really).

Looked into it myself. If you want to try remapping you can edit the /system/usr/keylayout/ text files with something like Root Explorer.

Clockworkmod is not safe to use and won't be until a better developer gets involved. Once that happens (if it does) I am sure you will see some stock roms.

I couldnt get this to work on windows

i got this:

Plug the phone in with a USB cord and have it booted up normally.
Please install the included drivers before we begin.
Go to Settings . Applications . Developer Options and enable USB Debugging.
If these are done press any key to continue.
Press any key to continue . . .
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
< waiting for device >
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 1.494s]
booting...
FAILED (remote: not allowed)
finished. total time: 1.517s
Your device should now reboot normally. It is still rooting... don't unplug.
remount failed: Operation not permitted
failed to copy 'su' to '/system/bin/su': Read-only file system
failed to copy 'Superuser.apk' to '/system/app//Superuser.apk': Read-only file s

failed to copy 'busybox' to '/system/xbin//busybox': Read-only file system
Unable to chmod /system/bin/su: No such file or directory
Unable to chmod /system/xbin/busybox: No such file or directory
Unable to chmod /system/app/Superuser.apk: No such file or directory

You sure you have a MyTouch 4G from Huawei? And can you report the build/system information from Settings>About Phone?

That is almost what I would expect if he forgot to turn on debug mode for USB. it can mount and upload the files, but can't get adb shell to issue the reboot command

The failure was "fastboot boot rooted.img" which should not fail on our software.

When running the root tool. my device just reboots and fans on the Android screen. Doesn't seem to find the driver after it restarts. I've tried this in Windows XP & 7.

You did install the drivers correct?

Try another cable if not... if the phone is seen in ADB it should be seen in Fastboot too usually however.

or it would just hang at the t mo screen. are there some files needed on the phone to work root together with the root itself?

oh wow i just found a data cable that worked, a Samsung data cable from a Gravity Smart.

Anyone have a good app for tethering on this thing?

Probably could use SQL Lite Editor to make an entitle-ment check from a 1 to a 0 from Settings, but I don't have the phone anymore so its hard to tell.

Apps I know of:
FoxFi
SVTP Mobile Hotspot
Wifi Tether for Root Users

I have a notification in my tray that there is a software update for the phone. Does anyone have any idea if installing will mess with root access our not?
