I think I'll probably start off with creating a binary clock with the LEDs. I need a testbed to learn golang anyways. ☺ Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk

Here's an idea I been kicking around.

I have a couple of spare SD cards and I have the idea of loading them up with different OS's.

I installed the Rasbien on the NOOBS card just to check it out and was considering putting Arch on another one maybe the 32GB I have.

That leaves a 16GB card for another OS.

That would give me an 8gb for stock Rasbien, a 16 GB and a 32GB setup.

The wonderful thing about the Raspberry Pi is with SD cards loaded with different or the same systems all you have to do is switch cards.

Different environments with different OS's, man I love this Pi, I can't do that on a PC without a lot of work.

I have 3 ideas for projects:

1. My home already has sensors and an old securty system that I can run with a Pi with WiFi I can check on remotely.

2. Automate my entertainment system and lights that can be controlled remotely.

3. A Webcam setup to keep an eye on it all when I'm not home (At least I an find out how my little buddy rearranges my bed every day).

That would be a perfect setup for working on each one by simply using a different card.

I love it. I guess I just had an epiphany, Cool....

Looks like I may need a couple more slices of Pi!

I used a Logitech K330 keyboard and mouse combo with no problem.
I did use a Belkin 4 port USB adapter for more space though.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

I was in a bad automobile accident almost 2 years ago and I have had a bad week as far as pain goes.

Pain meds kinda' make it hard to concentrate.

Have you checked the batteries lately? I use a digital Multi meter.

You can see the picture of my setup and everything is pretty close to each other.

I experimented and found out the keyboard may have problems when the mouse doesn't.

I have it about 3 feet away from my main desktop because I plugged it into a rear USB port near my wireless card and it would block the signal to the wireless dongle.

Are you using the provided AC power supply or a USB powered port?

My apologies for not checking in this weekend.  I had plans of tinkering with the Pi this weekend, but my dsl modem decided to take a dive on Thursday and I didn't have home internet service until the AT&T technician came to the house to replace it today.  Things are looking better after a modem swap and now I can get back on track.

One thing I'd like to accomplish is the reduction of "cable clutter" while still having access to the Pi, breadboard, usb hub, etc.  One possible idea is to use a shoe box (flip-top type).  The cables would be stowed in the box, but the actual components would be secured on the top cover.  I'd have to create access holes in the lid in order to feed the cables in and out of the box, etc.  That's kind of where I'm at at the moment.  Anyone else have possible solutions?

Bought the kindle version of the user guide today. After some extensive reading, I was able to create files that sent output signals and recognize input signals utilizing gpio breakout, an led, button switch and some resistors. Learned some basic electronics with regards to resistors along the way.

Hey everyone, sorry for the delay, things have been keeping me busy lately. I'll have to take some pics of my setup then, I've got a 32"tv for PI, beside my small monitor for the pc, the PI itself is sitting right between the cable box and my router below my gaming tv. I've been searching around the net for different uses and some dyi tutorials, I'll have to buy a couple more components to accomplish what i have in mind. I've installed Raspian and played around a bit, seems to run pretty well. I tried playing Open Arena, should check it out in the PI store the graphics are nice, game play is a little choppy but easy to get used to. So far I'm really impressed with how much the PI can handle, I can't wait to get more started towards creating something.

Well I kept looking at all the pretty little gadgets that came with my Pi and decided to go a little different route.

While searching on Ebay I found these selling for $110.00 US with a couple of cables, a Wireless Dongle and a remote.

You can pick up the IR module and a remote for about $15.00 US but I'm just using my wireless keyboard and mouse for now to get things set up.

Mine is based on OpenElec not the RaspBmc OS as it is more compact and faster with some flexibility left.

You can do this for about $70.00 US with just the basics and a remote that actually cost less than the kits we won.

I started on my PC but soon migrated to the living room because that's where my cable modem and wireless router are.

Seems you need a hardwired ethernet internet connection when you first set it up so it will update itself (And it will do it every time if connected to the internet and restarted).

Was I ever surprised, TV, Movies, music - - anything you can stream from the internet is available with this little "Black Box" and your entertainment system.

Ha, I've got a Yamaha RX-V373 AV 5.1 Receiver,  Klipsch 1000 series speakers 100 watts X 5 channels with a powered subwoofer capable of 450 watts RMS.

I don't want to sound mean but it will make Junior hide under the bed. Love my little buddy and would never cause him any harm.

Here are some pictures (Sorry about the quality on some, I had to install the Moto-X camera on my XT926 to get better quality):

Let me know what you think...

I don't know if you saw or read Malakai's post on getting the "Bleeding Edge Software" for the raspberry or not: https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-update

I ran the update on mine and the preloaded "NOOBS" card that came with it seemed to be little out of date.

It takes a little while but seemed worth the time to get the update.

Quick post:  I had some free time this evening to conduct these updates.  Thanks for the links, GTIM2L8.  They worked out well.

Finally getting a chance to setup my OS. Giving Raspbian a go. I'll probably use it until I get time to get Fedora or Arch running on it.

Arrived by USPS while I was out-of-town. When I returned home I opened the box and found all of this.

13531315203_725eccda6d.jpg13531317253_7e476e86f8.jpg

I had no idea where to start. It looks like there were a lot of books created 2 years ago and some last year, but I figured I could find stuff online to get me started. There is a green piece of paper that talks about soldering and components and how they are represented in a schematic. Since there is no included documentation in the box, I'll see how far I can get before I need some help. Instinctively, because I’ve put computers together before, I recognize the motherboard, the case, the USB wifi, the power supply, the SD card and HDMI cable. The ribbon cable, the white board with holes, the resistors, LEDs, push button, and wires I have no idea what those are for. I put the motherboard in the case, after punching out the plastic tabs where the LAN and USB ports, and before closing the top I notice where the ribbon cable should go. I am not quite sure if I need this or not so I leave it off for right now. There are 4 screws that hold the case together, but I only use two, since I’m sure I’ll be back in the case, plus two screws are enough to hold it together.

13531156805_0b2d740371.jpg13531163625_63a683da7c.jpg

I am looking at this small computer and I see the LAN and USB ports, the SD card slot, the open slot where the ribbon cable would come out if I had it connected, the micro USB power port, a yellow RCA port, which I am assuming is video out, and a blue 1/8” port which I am assuming is audio out.

13531472164_8ceb2165ba_m.jpg13531474434_dd09fe99e9_m.jpg13531261263_8e0ea4d5ec_m.jpg13531475854_b694820ed6_m.jpg

I am thinking the OS is on the SD card. When I go to insert the SD card I see it is a micro SD to SD card adapter. The micro SD card is 8GB. The SD card will only insert into the slot one way and that is berry side down ;). I also insert the usb wifi in one of the USB slots.

13531479354_fa55832f2e.jpg13531481564_f07b7ed9bc.jpg

Lastly I attached the power adapter and the HDMI cable and walk over to my television to connect it, and it dawns on me that I need a usb keyboard. Luckily I have one (of course I have one). Well now I know what the second USB port is for. So now I’m finally ready to see what this thing is going to do. I see some pretty colors, a Raspberry with a recovery mode option and then a utility screen where I can choose from a list of different OSs to install. I also notice that the version of NOOBS is 1.2.1 from June of last year...well, that seems old.

13531172775_2d55dfa80f.jpg13531485014_5a72f23dfd.jpg13531271223_dc6d6486ab.jpg

I figure I can reinstall an OS at anytime and I go for the recommended OS install. Woooo, I get a warning that the SD card is going to be overwritten. So I stop here because I’d like to do a little more research before I install the OS.

13531488564_46fb1b9cce.jpg

I found the quick start guide after I got it all hooked up, http://www.raspberry...ick-start-guide, :). Also found this what-next article from Endgadet, http://www.engadget....d-guide-how-to. I want to do a little research on different OS options first before moving forward.

Over the week-end I coordinated with the local library to be the facility for my coding camp this summer. The coding camp is an introduction to the children from ages 7-17 into the world of programming. It will include a website page, PC game, and a mobile app. These are all one day events making use of HTML/CSS, Android AppInventor, and BETA. For those children that have a serious interest in coding there will be a more in-depth class after the camp. I am looking at how I can incorporate the Raspberry Pi into the camp. The library has agreed to supply any books we might need for the camp and coding classes. I researched a few books on Raspberry Pi that I thought would be good for the camp and for those that might be interested in more in-depth coding.

adventuresinraspberrypi.jpg
Adventures in Raspberry Pi - http://www.amazon.co...n/dp/1118751256
This got good reviews and comes from an educator and someone who is doing what I’m doing, exposing and teaching children to coding.

hello-world-programming-kids1.jpg
Hello, World!: Computer Programming for Kids and Other Beginners - http://www.amazon.co...s/dp/1617290920
Again, another book with good reviews, written for teaching children. This is a book on learning to code with Python. The library is ordering 10 of these books to be used as the text for the coding course.

51oNtljdjDL._SX258_PJlook-inside-v2,TopR
Raspeberry Pi Cookbook - http://www.amazon.co...k/dp/1449365221
Another book with ideas for Raspberry Pi projects that can be used as a reference.

There are many more Raspberry Pi books coming out this year, but these are the ones that I think will be the most helpful now.

While waiting on my Raspberry Pi kit to arrive I did some looking around and I found a couple of articles that bring the Raspberry Pi craze into some perspective. These articles mainly talk about how the Raspberry Pi it touted as a $35 computer when in fact you MUST spend more in order for it to be useful.

Because I’m a coder, a “geek”, with servers and spare parts the extras aren’t that big of a deal because I have a USB keyboard/mouse, speakers, monitor with HDMI or RCA video, SD card, etc. But when I thought about purchasing individual Raspberry Pis for the camp coding projects, then it became something to figured out, and didn't seem so practical for accomplishing the goal of learning to code. I understand the concept of Raspberry Pi is to build something around this motherboard as opposed to just using it as a PC, and this gives it appeal. I'm hopeful it will inspire a young person to be creative.
