Since a few of us have just won Raspberry Pis, and others already have them, I thought it would be cool to do a public brainstorming session for fun things you could do with it.

Some ideas I've had floating around for a while:

Sunrise Alarm Clock

Get a RGB LED Ribbon and connect it to your GPIO pins (unsure how right now). Then write a cron job, or some other app to run a script at a specified time that changes the lights to simulate a sunrise.

ToDo Lock Box

Get a box, and a motor that can be used to latch the box from the inside. Connect the RaspPi to the motor, and only let it open when your ToDo list is empty for the day (you can do this by querying the ToDo list's API).

Here is a guy that is using a RaspPi to control a bunch of different lights: http://blog.lastlog....ry_pi/#index4h1

Not sure if this is the right place for this, I haven't created anything yet, but I just set up Raspian and started brainstorming on what I'd like to do.  Maybe something with my guitar? Lighting on the wall for each individual note I play? Some riffs could also display certain words or open programs maybe? Any thoughts on these ideas would be great, thanks!

I posted somethings along that line in this thread. Seems we have a few guitar players here. I just got my kids a Strat and Rocksmith 2014 been trying to get them to learn for years.

I'm still trying to sort out what I need for a few ideas I'm kicking around.

I've been looking at a RASPBERRY PI PI FACE and a SainSmart Expansion Board for Raspberry PI for a control interface for external devices.

The Pi face is pretty straight forward but does not add any USB or video outputs unlike the SainSmart EB.

The SainSmart EB does offer a system clock and a battery backup along with

3-port USB hub, memory card reader, and 8-channel darlington Driver.

The SainSmart  RS232 port is connected to the UART port on the Raspberry Pi using a MAX3232 interface. The MAX3232 IC converts the 3.3V UART port to RS232 voltages allowing communication with RS232 compatible devices over a DB9 serial cable or with the use of a null-modem cable the board allows terminal access with linux on the Raspberry Pi using a terminal application. The RS232 port can be accessed through the DB9 port.

Anyone have any experience with either of these devices?

Sorry for the line spacing but the cut and paste option is a little squirrely here at work.

The Gertduino is also a choice over the Sainsmart for RS232 and RTC.

  • RS232 level converter can be used by:
    • Raspberry-Pi
    • Atmega-328
    • Atmega-48
  • Atmega 328 (Arduino-Uno® compatible) with:
    • Arduino-Uno® compatible connectors
    • Reset button
    • 2 user push buttons
    • 6 LEDs.
  • Atmega 48 with:
    • I/O connector with 20 pins.
    • High precision RTC crystal
    • Battery backup power supply
    • IRDA interface

I just read your topic on winning one of these and went to the element 14 website a read up on it.

There are so many choices it is hard to know where to actually start.

The Gertduino looks like it may do what I need plus it comes with the IRDA reciever and interface built in.

Thanks for replying as I did a lot of research trying to find an answer but everything is so versatile I guess I  need to determine how many and what type of external components I need before choosing.

The idea for the catalogue is a great idea and as I stated in the other thread I would love to help.

Thanks again.

If anyone is into home brewing this could be a Project for you:

http://www.brewpi.com/

Regulate the temp of your brews, all of us homebrewers know how important the temp is while fermenting. Yeast can be a picky creature.

Most of the work is done by the Arduino microcontroller and the PI gives a nice user interface with the system.
