My husband and I are co-teaching a class on getting started on Raspberry Pi. He received a grant (he's a public library director) so we were able to purchase 30 starter kits, a few small HDMI TVs, plus keyboards and mice. The students range from elementary school to middle age. They will be able to keep their pis at the end of the class.

So far we've gotten them all to install Rasbian and install Minecraft from the command line. Tonight we start Scratch.

I have the black Canakit case. I prefer the clear snap case that the students have. I'll have to order one.

I'll continue to add to this post as the class progresses.

That is great. I love "The students range from elementary school to middle age" part.

It just goes to show you these are for all ages.

Makes me want to go to the library!!!

Here's a link to the simple Scratch demo that I whipped together in a few minutes to show the students. Don't laugh.

Right now I'd rather just have one that I can get at the pi faster and easier. I don't like that this one screws shut. I might just throw something together with Junior's legos.

Also, one of these days I'll probably upload our powerpoints. Kaos had mentioned filming the classes, but it's mostly hands on stuff for the students so there's nothing to film.

Thank you

Staf_in_Wah

I now know I've found a place where I belong. I wish your project all the best. And look forward to your progress. This post alone justifies my time here :) The Pi and Kids are what fuel my passion.

I'll post al the cases that I know of one will suit your needs I am sure. I know the frustration of the cases that don't come apart easily vs those that do. There are so many choices and so many you will never see until you've gotten the wrong one.

Feel free to PM me with anything you need. I have been following the Pi for 2 years now and hope to be a great resource for you.

AND I Will love to blog about your progress and the progress of all the kids that get involved..

Sweetness.  I was thinking of picking one of these up just to play with in my spare time.  Maybe get Junior (8 year old boy) interested in programming a bit.  If I can tear him away from my iPad where he's obsessed with watching minecraft videos lately.

Thank you so much! This is a lot of fun so far. I'm hoping to bring the program to my own library at some point, but for now I'm letting Mr. Staf be the guinea pig. I figured if he did this that I would be a big part of it as I'm even geekier than he is. So this is a good way to do it. I can hammer out all of the problems there then make my own program look fabulous. If I can get a grant for it. Ha.

We are always interested in finding ideas on things to do with the students. We are kind of making it up as we go along. Those participating say that they have enrolled so that they can learn more about computer programming. I'm not good at proceeding without a plan, though. What I need to do is just plan out a lot of projects and make them so for each class to show variety. We want them to make their own projects by the end and have a show for the last classes, then they will be able to keep their Pis.

Hopefully we will be able to get funding to do it again. There was no charge for the class, and they get both a Pi and direction. What a deal! I love being able to do this kind of stuff.

Have you grabbed the CAS Manual it's a start and it seems to be buried in their website.

http://downloads.ras...tion_Manual.pdf

http://www.raspberry...g/archives/2965

http://cas-pi-educat...al.wikidot.com/

There are some free resources here as well

http://projects.code...orld.org/en-GB/

Well outlined for a complete lesson. 11 Basic Lessons in Scratch. 3 Advanced. Also HTML and Python.

Sonic Pi - a free music and computing resource for teachers, and for the rest of us

Python Programming with Minecraft Pi: Early Draft

http://arghbox.wordp...on-early-draft/

Code IT UK

Hope these help if you get stuck or want to see what's out there. Also great resources to send them home with I would think.

Anytime if you ever get someone who wants to catalog all my Facebook page updates into a catalog for a one stop all inclusive web resource for Pi related activities. I will let you have an all exclusive ad revenue to fund your project. I have about 2,000 things to go through. I am not in it for the money I just envisioned a place to get ideas, etc.. I fully support education but lack the time to do it all alone. I just wish a place existed where I could easily navigate a Pi project that I want to build and have it automatically show me how to do it. That's a world I want to live in.

The whole reason I created the site was in the beginning and even now it's impossible to find what you want about the Pi. Such as how to make an alarm clock, make a led blink, etc.. For those who know how to program it's natural for those learning it's a pain.

I always wanted a catalog like. Object then all the sample scripts available.

Robots:

Rapiro (What it is where to buy it)

----- CGI Web interface

----- NetIO Web interface

PiBorg - Control Robots from your Raspberry Pi

------ Sample scripts (Not on their site)

Hardware:

Gertduino

------ Tutorials, Sample scripts

Cooking Hack's Raspberry Pi to Arduino Shield Bridge

Something like that. The best I got early on was the sidebar on my site:

I have to have at least 2,000 projects, Hardware, Code Samples, etc. I have found and put on my Facebook Page. My Blog is linked to my Facebook which is linked to my Twitter. If I write an article it goes to all 3. If I put it on my FB page it just goes to FB and Twitter. If I tweet it. It's just a tweet. I linked them all slowly so I have 1,777 tweets and I seldom just tweet, plus not all the guides are on FB. I keep finding more stuff.

Like all the curriculum above. Most of that I have not cataloged. I was always hoping to put together a site for it or a free PDF of links and such or just write a book with all these places. Since not all is Open Source it can't be a paid for thing. It's not my work after all. But the ad revenue which probably won't ever be much is. The site costs me about $120 a year I have barely broken even at best. But it's not all that much I will go broke $10 a month basically.

Oh you came to the right place for organization. Soocold is the king of OCD extreme organization. What he brought to our forums as far as organization is priceless especially at a time when we were expanding to include more phones than just the Razr.

If it's possible Soocold can get it organized...

I have many ideas already, but i think ill share my distilled thoughts in a group PM. Ill let this stew on my mind a couple more nights and then ill start up the PM.

as for any moneys id request they get split between the sites operation funds and a forum give away fund. but lets not get the cart b4 the horse, first i have to see if I can manage a working catalog to all parties standards.
