Raspbmc works well (for a low cost application). I am using it for my media center. I have my pi powered off the USB port on my tv so that the pi turns on and off with the tv and am able to use the tv's remote to navigate. I will say the menu's are a little laggy compared to the xmbc version running on a laptop but still acceptable.

That's just one example of how versatile the pi is. Having such a low power requirement just make the potential explode.

I am not to worried about SD card, I have the SD flash backed up and the card is only ten bucks. In my eyes that is replaceable. I don't believe the TV turning off will hurt the card as the power off isn't the same as power lose.

My TV doesn't give enough power to the PI to power an external HDD though which is kinda disappointing.

 

The TV remote is able to control the pi by HDMI-CEC which has limited controls but enough to utilize most of Raspbmc's functions. (Before I found out about HDMI-CEC I used a wireless qwerty keyboard and mouse pad which was about the size of a phone)

Power loss while writing to the card can corrupt it yes. Shutdown gracefully and wait for the green LED to flash 1.2.3.4.5 and it's all good.

 

I have had my Raspbmc running straight for well over a year now without any issues. Typically if your working on a project or moving around the Pi it does happen accidentally. I have had sever power losses running up to 3 Pi's doing various things and they all survived. It's not much different with a PC if it happens to be writing a critical file and losses power the file becomes corrupt.

 

2 Pi's are my son's and they come over for visitation they've never had an issue at all with it. Don't swap out devices in the USB port that can draw a lot of power when plugged in. My wireless cards if inserted will reboot the pi due to power draw on startup of the card.

 

You can only see the boot section on a PC of the SD Image that you can copy over and over again if one of those files is lost. Otherwise setup what you need and backup with something like Win32Diskimager. Not much changes on the many images that can't easily be updated.
