BerryBoot v2.0 - bootloader / universal operating system installer
For people short on SD cards: Berryboot is a simple boot selection screen, allowing you to put multiple Linux distribution on a single SD card.
In addition it allows you to put the operating system files on an external USB hard drive instead of on the SD card itself.
NOTE: It does have some limitations. If an item is missing like raspi-config, etc. It means it's not compatible with BerryBoot. But it's still fun to try out this multi OS

So if the SD card sent with the PI has NOOBS pre-loaded, should I continue with the latest 1.3 NOOBS? I've already downloaded the zip and the file system looks similar but slightly different from the pre-loaded...trying to get started

Ok great, I guess I'll try the new one and go from there. I'm really trying to get a perspective of the many things I'd like to accomplish with this, but getting the basics down for now is a start

you can use any any SD card as long as it is a high enough class. I can't remember the minimum class off the top of my head. Then you can download any any of several OSs from raspberry pi's siteOk great, I guess I'll try the new one and go from there. Requirements
New Out of Box Software (NOOBS) onto a 8GB (or larger) SD card
Raw images
(2GB or larger, 4GB or larger for Raspbian)
Check here for more details:
http://elinux.org/RPi_SD_cards
As far as the Class it won't really improve the Pi's performance it doesn't do a lot of read/write it goes to memory. But when it comes to burning and reading the SD for Backup / Install the higher the class the faster it goes. When you start you may find some corruption due to hasty unplugs, etc. This just depends on you but you get the hang of it quick.
Also check out the verified peripherals page to see if you have a device that is known to cause issues:
