Why don't you build a desktop then? I'm sorry but building a compiling/gaming beast of a laptop seems like such a waste to me. Oh and I agree with the rest of what you said ;-)

I have a desktop that buries the living hell out of most mortal machines, but, I refuse to put a dev env on it. It's for HTPC and gaming ONLY.

Yea, and I simply don't have time to mess with rom stuff. Nor is my laptop really suited to building it. My new laptop will be whenever I get around to saving up for one. By then I hope to have a phone where you can flash partitions instead of relying on safestrap. It's the lack of ability to flash a kernel that's causing all these problems.
It's also the OMAP processor that causes problems, not just the locked bootloader. It's apparently specific to Moto, and there's not wonderful dev material for it, I guess?

I can see a gaming PC. But do you need the high end PC to be for HTPC? Unless you're converting and streaming video on the fly via PS3MediaServer to multiple different devices or some such, it doesn't take a massive amount of horsepower to send a bit of data over your LAN at a regular interval. Hard disk access speed sounds pretty inportant there, but not so much processor power.

Yet the OMAP4 is used on the GNex and it has no issues.....
Hmm. I don't know, then. Obviously the locked bootloader is the biggest PITA, but I could have sworn that it just being OMAP4 was also part of the problem. Maybe it was a result of the bootloader and not being able to get the kernel modules for omap to work properly?

Exactly. Not being able to replace the kernel is the issue. That's why the promise of Kexec is so huge. But it's also really hard. Being able to flash a kernel makes it 100% easier.

Hmmm... Either way adding another HD and having it compile at night would work and a hell of a lot cheaper than a gaming laptop... That is unless you have ish rendering at night :-)

Yeah PS3 media server doesn't use that much juice unless you're cranking a couple 1080p mkv files.

Bottom line is anyone that is really into this needs to switch to an unlocked phone and never look back... The headache from this crap isn't worth it

I'm getting to that point. We're so close to 1) getting JB on Bionic to tide us over, and 2) to seeing the S4 and the X phone that I can wait. But I will have an unlockable phone this year for sure.

I've really got high hopes for the Xphone. I hope that it doesn't let me down.
That said, I could probably deal with sticking with my Bionic for a while once we get JB. I'm not big into the ROM scene anymore and have been running stock for a while. You can still get so much out of the phone without a custom ROM that the stability issues aren't worth it to me.
I wish I hadn't become so spoiled by Bluetooth, then I would probably run CM10.1. I honestly use BT every day for a lot though.

Contrary to popular belief, unlocking your phone is not JUST about flashing custom roms. That's certainly a big part of it for a lot of people, but, the bigger issue for even those who remain on stock is root. Without an unlockable phone, you have to wait for someone to provide you with a root exploit every time they update the phone. The Bionic is about to go through that with JB. We may get lucky and already have an exploit that works when the JB build is released, or, we may not. With an unlocked phone we don't care. Install a custom recovery, flash the su binary package, done. No exploit needed cause unlocking gives YOU control of YOUR phone.

I find it pretty amazing when I'm told, with the small amounts I donate, that I'm a top donater to most developers. I consider myself a person who donates his time to this community rather than $ and so when I'm told otherwise I'm disgusted by how much people take without giving back. Karma's a beotch.

I agree. And Dan just released a JB exploit a couple weeks ago that he believes will work on all the new Moto JB builds. This is different than RAZR Blade. So we'll see if it works. But people should be donating for sure. I, like you, devoted my time to the community and gave them the HoB as my contribution. But I also give to the devs that help me the most and I always encourage others to do the same.
Exactly... Hell I gave Davros $50 so he could get a bionic. I get that most people can't be throwing out $50.00 on a whim but everyone can afford a buck or two.
ANYWAY, I have an upgrade coming in June to this account so I am going to make myself wait until then. I have another upgrade already ready but the curse of the bionic needs to be permanently engraved into my memory so I never make this mistake again.

I'm not quiet, lol I hold almost 2% of all post on Droidrzr. The problem is that those of us who do appreciate all the hard work are often less vocal than the grousing grumblers who want to complain.
