Currently I am running Arctic and loving it. However I would love to add a gmail icon to the unlock screen but still keep the niffy penguin lock screen.

As we are not fully able to customize the lockscreen itself, you would have to get an app that would allow you to make your own lockscreen (Go Locker). If you want it so badly, I would suggest you as a Developer (mattlgroff) to see if he can do it for you, or another developer.

Yeah from my experience , the lock screen is a biotch to tinker with
