I was under the impression that safestrap qualified as a custom recovery.  Is that not the case.  As I said, the phone is rooted.

You also need an unlocked bootloader.  Read up a little more about SS.  It doesn't replace your stock recovery, you can't replace it with a locked BL.  SS works in conjunction with the stock recovery, but does not replace it.

Ok - so there is no way to run a custom rom on any razr m with the 98.30.1 OTA on it and there is no way to backrev to an earlier firmware?  I'm not being sarcastic, I just want to make sure i'm understanding correctly.

You can run Blur based roms with safestrap. You cannot downgrade

RikRong is correct, you must be rooted and have a unlocked bootloader to use our rom. I'm sorry you can't experience our awesomeness. But you don't have to use blur, there is also cm10.1 available for SS.

Okay, so I finally got 4.4.28 to stick after staying up until 2am troubleshooting, I was able to get the build to stick, but unable to recover all of my data. I was able to restore most of it with ROM Toolbox Pro, but every time I would restore Messages (DATA) which is all tied into the phone process, something would get goofed up. Either way, I restored all my user apps and app data using a combo of RTBPro and Google back up. Great build so far and hoping to download the new one today!

PS. I'm still using TWRP

Our new build now contains Titanium Backup. From now on use that to backup your stuff including the messages. I restore my messages (sms and mms) with no issues on 4.4.285.
So apparently it wasn't twrp causing the issues, there was just a bug in that build.

The key is having an unlocked boot loader. You cannot flash a ROM like beanstalk unless your bootloader is unlocked. I got lucky and unlocked the week before the OTA push that prevents anyone else from unlocking.

I unlocked mine the day the patch was released
Also i just found out that the guy that made patches to unlock bootloaders and made root for Motorola, has retired from doing this. He said stop supporting companies that don't want you to customize your phone.... Such as Motorola and Verizon. Go to someone that doesn't care like T-Mobile.

That was actually my thoughts exactly.  If I were to brick my phone or render it unusable and then managed to convince Verizon to replace it, it still wouldn't affect Motorola.  Why companies like this think that they own a device they sell to you is beyond me.  I loved my HTC Thunderbolt but so far this Motorola Razr M is a huge disappointment.  I tried to install an apps 2 sd app this afternoon and apparently this phone is also incapable of doing that.  I will do my best to avoid doing business with Motorola in the future but it's a phone my company bought so my options are limited at this point.

 

Thank you to everyone who helped or contributed.  The CM 10.1 is JB isn't it?  I was really hoping to try a KK based ROM.  Hopefully after they release the next OTA update there will be more options.  Thanks again!

If you make it unusable you can use rsd lite to get it back working again. I can help you with that if you need it later on.
And i love Motorola but they don't want you unlocked that's why there is a developers edition of the razr m that is unlocked. I believe cm10.1 is jb based and there is no kk based roms on ss now.... There should be after the update because it is official and developers can work with that for ss roms.

There was an unofficial version of CM that was on XDA.  It was modified to work with SS.  The ones on the CM website are not SS compatible.

Only thing that is broken is the camera, so you cant use camera, or just use a stock based rom like flyingjelly or Ragerom

So I'm getting mixed signals. I'm on 40404 and downloaded the most recent update. do I have to wipe everything and then install or can I just wipe cache and dalvik and flash? I hate restoring apps and stuff haha. takes forever.
