Take a screenshot of it. I've never seen one (I'm sure yours are on Verizon.) But then again, I only used the femtocell's when I had Sprint which even then they were worthless...

Their effective radius is only like 40ft in an open room, so, it doesn't take much to bring the signal down.

While I don't know how Verizon functions with their fems, mine use to beep while in a call once I was in the service area and leaving the service area. Seemed to always beep as I was opening and closing the front door... :

Yeah same thing. Beeps at the beginning of a call or when you enter/leave network support. If you dial #48 it will tell you if you are connected to an active network extender.

The icon in reference to what this guy is talking about is shown below. It will be shown right up above your Data signal bar when you get connected to it. You will also see it when connected to a open Private Cell booster, AKA Network Extender as Livinginkaos pointed out, that you can purchase online to bring in the single when you live in a low service area. I do see it from time to time also.

Well, with newer devices you have no clue They don't use the added icon. You just have to go by the beep or do the #48 to know. Mine works ok, but it added delay to the voice and I HATE that. Drives me bonkers.
