So, next Q... I flashed the file and still get a ""<bootloader> Variable not supported!"
Message, then when I reboot and go to recovery I get a black screen...
is that supposed to happen?

"Supposed to"? No. It's been happening to a lot of people. All I can tell you is keep reflashing it until it works. That's the only fix I've seen and no one seems to know why it's happening.

Fair enough, I can do that.
Update: Persistence paid paid off and the item is now up and going...

I just tried to boot into recovery, but it seemed to get stuck on the little android dude laying down. Anything ideas?

Your flash didn't go right or you let it boot normal after flashing instead of booting directly into recovery. Either way, flash it again.

At the dead Andy, Hold Vol+ and tap power. It will take you to the menu from there.

No, sounds like he didn't flash CWM. That would be the stock recovery.
Or are you being facetious?

No I was genuinely asking cause I haven't used it on these devices. Ever. I use the text only version on my S4. I didn't THINK it'd have the andy icon but I wasn't sure.

Yeah, haven't flashed yet. Still can't get it into the stock recovery! I'll get it sooner or later. Maybe I'm not being patient enough.
Edit: I waited out the dead andy icon and it eventually just booted normally. I also tried tapping all 3 buttons. Maybe there's some other trick I'm missing.

For stock recovery you hold volume UP and tap power.

Ha, you were right, but now the utility is telling me to go into AP Fastboot now. :
CWM Flashed but SuperSu did not. Odd. The utility said it did. Gonna try to flash superSU again from recovery instead of the utility.
Edit 2: Now recovery is just a black screen. ACK. I'm gonna wait on this, I just realized I'm using USB3 again. Might be relevant.
Edit 3: Yeah, it was USB3. Problem solved!! SamuriHL (no a) is the man.

If you are stuck on the "dead Andy" logo, you can use the method that Sam said: hold vol up and power. That should get you into recovery.
For me, I started the bat file and it first asked me if I wanted to install the recovery image that I had dropped into the recovery folder that came with the zip. At that point, I just followed the onscreen instructions and it worked. It first asked me to start into AP Fastboot to start the recovery. After CWM was installed, it asked me to boot into recovery to install the SuperSU (I downloaded the latest version 1.99 and replaced the one in the folder).
However, my problem was using USB3, not USB2. Once I switched, it worked fine. So definitely make sure you are on that type, if possible.
