Matt, I just wanted to drop by and say thanks to you and the community. You guys are awesome for providing amazing support and tools. It's not much but there are a couple of beers coming your way. I'll send it using your bat signal.

Ok this is just a general question, I have already rooted using the utility 1.7 and I was on the Soak test no issues and actually this post really isnt for me I am just trying to prove a point to someone else. Has anybody recieved the Official OTA not the leak or soak (yes I know they are the same) and rooted the OTA using the utility?

For what it's worth, I got the ota without root. And I can't root it with the utility. Tried everything, and I know the cable's good, just used it to sbf my X. I'm curious about this too. Maybe moto blocked this root method?

I don't know if this helps but here was my situation and what I did.
Before OTA:
- Was on GB .181
- rooted using DroidRAZRUtility1.6 Option #2
- safestrap installed Option #8
- froze some apps using TiBu

Before downloading OTA:
- Removed safestrap (uninstalled recovery and removed apk)
- Defrosted apps
- unrooted using DroidRAZRUtility1.6 Option #4
= failed to install OTA twice

Successful OTA install and root:
- selected option #1 in DroidRAZRUtility1.6 to fastboot back to stock .181 (this took awhile because it seemed like my comp froze, eventually started working again after some time)
- after fastboot I immediately installed the OTA when the phone booted up
- after installing OTA, enabled USB Debugging and Unknown sources
- downloaded DroidRazrUtility1.7forICS and extracted folder to desktop and ran the .bat file. I read somewhere that it has to be on the desktop
- selected Option #3 in DroidRazrUtility1.7forICS to root. Phone rebooted a couple of times during rooting process

Hope that helps someone who's having trouble.

Correct. I just made sure I put the extracted 1.7 Utility folder on my desktop and enabled USB debugging and Unknown Sources before selecting Option #3 to root.

Dude!!! i figured it out! to anyone having the device not found error. Try everything matt says first of course. IF THAT FAILS, factory reset your device. i just did it and it worked finally!!! my theory is that when the setting for usb debugging goes through the ota checked, it doesn't read in ICS for some reason. Just a theory

Well for starters we don't approve of insurance fraud. Second you don't have to read through this entire thread. Although the utility itself is self explanatory, there are also 4 threads in the development section that walk you through step by step.

I did an OTA update to the official ICS earlier today and later downloaded a custom ROM based on the official version. Made a backup, flashed the ROM, and the install failed. I tried to restore my backup and that failed too. Currently I appear to have a bricked phone--I can get into fastboot and stock recovery, however. Can I use the utility to restore ICS? Since I did an OTA update I don't have the update file on my SD card. I was hoping I could use version 1.6 to restore back to GB, then do the OTA again, but this didn't work for me.

Is it extracted? Do you have the proper drivers installed? Do you have the utility on your desktop or on your C: drive?

I don't know then, I literally just downloaded it. Dragged the zip to my desktop, extracted it with WinRAR and ran the utility. Worked perfectly.

redownload the file. Save it. Then go into your downloads and click on it. It should show three files. When you see that you need to extract to desktop. That's one way to do it easily. Then go to your desktop and double click on it. Bam. Should be that simple. Sounds possibly you got a bad download. And since you did this before with your 1.6 you should be OK. Just download again.

I believe there is option two in matts utility 1.7 you will need, however. First power off, then go to fast boot and go to stock recovery..then just wipe data factory reset and I would wipe cache too then reboot. If that fails I believe there is an option in matts 1.7 utility that will get you back...but look in his thread his help thread on utility 1.7 and he has a list of options if fail occurs...hope this helps:)

Option 2 seems to require that you already have .211 on your SD card. I don't have this, and I don't know how to get it there with a bricked phone.... is there a way?

It sounds like you're suggesting doing a wipe in stock recovery and then running option 2, is that right? Again, I think I would still need to have .211 on my SD card.

I've read trough the thread and haven't seen anything related to this. Thanks though for the response.
