Yes. And I'm all about people learning the process rather than coming up with tricky automation to do it for them. I could probably automate it but it'd be a beotch to do and wouldn't necessarily work every time. Learning how to do it by hand and being adaptable...that's the way to go. The first thing to do is to extract the partitions. I showed you guys how to get a list of partitions by-name. The next step is to dd extract those into files. You'll have to find the proper name for each partition file. aboot.bin boot.img etc. Once you have those extracted, then you learn to use Cygwin to add the partition files to the tar file in the proper order and then generate an md5 for it. There's 3 commands on a Cygwin command line to make that happen. I don't know the proper order. One thing you won't have is the signed PIT file. HOPEFULLY none of you will be stupid enough to try changing your partition table so that's not critical. Now this is all if you want to create an ODIN flashable tar md5. If you just want to have the files and be able to flash what you need, heimdall is what you wanna learn. There's a lot to take in, but, once you learn it you become a valuable member of the community and can help others.

ODIN. Heimdall is a bit daunting. I've not even mastered it yet. Nor have I put much effort into trying.

I got a question about the Dev Edition Recovery.
Does it have the same glitches with TWRP that the regular version does?
I currently am using a regular vzw s4 that i was lucky enough to get a custom recovery on before the update but every once in awhile in will freeze in the twrp boot screen. I saw that Samsung shows the dev edition in stock again. I was considering getting it. I've been pretty anti Samsung since the S3 I had becasue of the weak signal and battery life problems, the fact that it would get SOD constantly.
I already had this S4 on swappa to sale because I was planning on getting the Moto X Developer Edition but now I'm torn. I actually used this S4 for the last few days just to see what it was about and as I put in another thread a few people in this forum were correct. The signal strength is amazing. Pretty close to on par with My RAZR HD DEV I had and the battery life is pretty outstanding as well.
Thats why I was wondering about the Dev Edition S4, since it's factory unlocked.

TWRP 2.6.x.x is having issues across the board for all devices. Or at least a lot of them. A bunch of people have gone back to the 2.5.x.x versions. I'm on a GPE and only have 2.6.0.0 and I've not used it enough to know if there's a lot of bugs or not. Getting to the point where I'm tempted to switch to CWM touch recovery. I wouldn't let a few recovery bugs stop you from going with an S4 DE though.

I'd buy both the Moto X DE and Samsung GS4 DE but probably would loose the wife.

Well, someone needs to create one and I've not had time to dig into how to do it yet. I am off for 4 days so maybe I'll have some time this weekend as I want to learn how to do it for my GPE, as well.

I haven't, either, but, I know how to break it easy enough. Do a compressed, split backup. Stuff will make you unhappy.

Thanks. And the ODIN stuff isn't too hard. It's 3 commands in a cygwin prompt. For example, say I want to create an ODIN flashable recovery image for stock recovery....
In a cygwin terminal, do the following:
The stock_43_recovery.tar.md5 file is what you can then load into the PDA section of ODIN and flash it to get restore stock recovery.
Extracting the partitions is fairly easy, as well, but you must be rooted. You can even use an adb root shell to do it. It looks something like:
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery of=/sdcard/recovery.img
This path here:
/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/
shows you all the partitions on your phone.

Hence why I said to use the by-name partition location to find the partitions. It's not THAT different. We have a different PIT but the partitions themselves are the same.
