I just wanted to thank SamuriHL for your patience as I asked noob questions about the simple root method. I ran the root process this morning the correct way and it failed. I re-ran in tonight and I now have root! I think my mistake was addressing the SuperUser notifications during the root process. The second time I tried, I just ignored the SU notifications and it worked. The only adjustment I made in the directions was in booting into AP Fastboot. The directions said hold down the vol down and the power button. I had to hold down the vol up + vol down + power to make it work.
Thank you so much for all your work in making this easy, even though I tried to make it difficult.

When I go into recovery it doesn't say "apply update from SD card external storage" it just says "apply update from external storage" and the blur file isn't in there?! what do I do?

ok so I went through this whole process and everything seemed to work fine, got past a hitch with the help of @livinginkaos. But, I rebooted and was super excited only to install root checker and discover that I was not indeed rooted!!! argh, what should I do from here? just go back through the process?

Okay, so, I literally just got my Razr M this morning and am the type of person who likes to tinker with their stuff. I modded my wii, I run a really reduced Linux distro, etc.
I was wondering if all of this worry applies to devices on the 98.16.3.Xt907.Verizon.en.US update as well? I know it's just as new as 9.18.78, but I'm really new to this so I just want to make sure.
Also, I know this is sort of a loose thing, but as people with lots of experience, how would you suggest I start going about rooting my phone, especially if the bootloader is no longer possible? Linux friendly options would be cool, but I have access to windows and stuff, if need be.
I know that's a lot to ask and a lot of people are asking it! I appreciate you putting the time into this stuff, honestly. Thanks a ton.

THIS ROOT METHOD IS FOR LOCKED XT907 DEVICES THAT TOOK THE 07/13 UPDATES on System Version 98.18.78
The latest updates kill the ability to Root with Motochopper and also block the ability to unlock the bootloader with Motopocalypse. With this, we can at least get Root restored. Unlocking the bootloader is no longer an option.
This method does NOT erase data and that is not required for any part of the process.
In order to achieve root once again, we must:
1. Roll back the system to the previous version using a modified FXZ avoiding the tz flash
2. Take Root with Motochopper
3. Protect Root
4. Update once more
5. Restore root.
Download the Utility
Extract the Zip file to the root of a drive (This is to ensure proper file locating)
Navigate to the folder and run the SamuriHL_Downgrade.bat
NOTE- Step one assumes you have an SD card installed.
Go through each step and follow the instructions at the prompts.
PROFIT !
In testing, it has ran smoothly, but there also were a couple that had freezing in two areas- the Protect Root and the Restore Root. This was at the end of either step when the script was waiting for the phone to reboot and it did not recognize that it had. This is ok, just close the command window, rerun the batch file and continue to the next step.

Okay, so I need a little assistance. I am currently on system version 98.16.3, and I'm updated to 4.1.2. The OTA for it came through as soon as I turned on the phone, and I didn't even think anything of it. I have tried rooting my device for almost 2 days now, with no luck. I have tried the tool above, along with a variety of other tools, and I am still not getting anywhere. Keeps telling me it failed. I have tried resetting the device, not going through the setup wizard and it still doesn't work. It keeps telling me that it failed. Any suggestions on what I could be doing wrong here?

"it failed". I mean, with that amount of information, I'm not sure what you're expecting anyone to tell you.

I apologize. It said that the exploit failed when it was trying to obtain root. I'll try to do a screenshot.

Better yet, document exactly what steps you followed when running the tool. Cause if you skip any, yes, it will fail. If the RSD flash doesn't work or finish, then it will fail. We need details. Motochopper is failing most likely cause your phone's not on the right version to make it work.

Actually... I got it to work. Sorry for the noob post. I guess I just wasn't quite sure how to word what was going on. But thanks again for your assistance.
