Thanks so much guys.  After reading all over the place, multiple threads etc....  This worked for me.  I had root before the update but of course lost it.  But this did the job.

I've read several threads on this forum and can see that there was a lot of work and collaborating going on.  Just wanted to say this was much appreciated.

THIS ROOT METHOD IS FOR LOCKED XT907 DEVICES THAT TOOK THE 07/13 UPDATES on System Version 98.18.78

The latest updates kill the ability to Root with Motochopper and also block the ability to unlock the bootloader with Motopocalypse.  With this, we can at least get Root restored.  Unlocking the bootloader is no longer an option.

This method does NOT erase data and that is not required for any part of the process.

Motochopper 1.1.2 for RAZR M is now available.  Download it here:

2. Extract files

3. Connect the phone to the computer USB 2 port

4. Ensure that USB debugging is enabled

5. Execute the Run.bat on Windows or Run.sh on Linux/Mac

6. Follow the prompts

7. Check root - if good then Profit! if not, continue below -

If you had previous root, sometimes it is required to clean the system partition of any remnants, so we can do that here:

8. Download the proper system.img or system.img.ext4 for your device

9. Place the file in the motochopper_1.1.2 directory

10. Jump back to #3

Correct me if I'm wrong but when I factory reset my phone it always rolls me back to stock ICS 4.0. Could I still upgrade only to the first few JB updates and unlock my boot loader before I get to the latest 98.18.78 update??? Cause I've factory reset before and i have to do about 3 upgrades before I'm finally fully updated to the last JB update. Can I unlock before then or can I unlock while on ICS?

Honestly, I am not sure if Motopocalypse works on ICS?  Maybe if you read through the thread -

Please Login or Register to see this Hidden Content

, you might see if someone else has or at least asked the question. But,  AS long as you don't install the last OTA you will be able to unlock.

Hello all. n00b here.

Firstly: Thank you mountains for the root utility. I am primarily saddened to have been unaware of unlocking/rooting before a couple of weeks ago, which was a few weeks after I accepted the most current OTA update.

Someone mentioned in this thread that flashing a ROM with SafeStrap should work. I have tried it to no avail.

I have been able to install SafeStrap, create a new ROM Slot and install the ROM after wiping/factory resetting. However, neither the 10.1 Cyanogenmod nor the 10.2 one released by either Skrilax or the Cyanogen team works. I see:

Moto Splash --> SafeStrap (10s) --> Dark.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

You still have a locked bootloader.  As such, you won't be able to use a ROM that's designed for an unlocked BL.  SafeStrap doesn't unlock your BL and it doesn't replace your stock recovery, it works in conjunction with it.  You need to find a ROM designed for SS or learn how to modify the other ROMs to work with SS.

The phone is not rooting. It says 'adb' is not recognized. What does that mean?

Why be really curious when it's been said MANY times repeatedly that you can NOT roll back and unlock if you've taken the latest update.

Hello,

I've tried to download this version of Motochopper by following the link in the post, but am getting a message that the link is no longer valid.  Is there an updated link, or a different way to get the file?  Thanks for any help you can provide.

Best regards,

Need a ROM designed for Safestrap - there's a couple stock-based ones here and on XDA, but they're not updated regularly...

If we ever restore our stock ROM from backup do we need to have only the system backed up or do both system and data need to be backed up in order for it to work?
