If you boot directly into twrp after flashing it... I. E. Do not let the phone boot normal... It is not necessary.

I was on such a roll unlocking my bootloader and rooting the 9.18.79 OTA that I didn't realize I might be going off-topic with these twrp questions.  I will continue my twrp inquiries in

Many thanks!

Ok, I tried the automated version 'SamuriHL_Downgrade'. All seemed to be going well until it said "SU bin not......." (sorry, didn't take screen capture), but continued on anyway through step 6. It did not root.  Can I retry using the same steps?

Note: I have an Otter Box which made it difficult to press the volume buttons at the same time along with the power button so it restarted and I had to redo that step. I've since removed the Otter Box.

Shall I try again?

Edit: I should say at step 5 it said "Installation aborted" IIRC.

Sorry, don't have phone with me right now.

I would say yes, try again. Keep an eye on what's going on so if there are problems you can detail a little more.

I am guessing that something went wrong during the roll back at the beginning. Have you tried starting over ?

Worked fine here with 9.20.1 and locked bootloader using the automated script.  Thanks!  Wish we could unlock the bootloader...too bad.   Really rethinking about getting a Motorola X when they come out if Motorola is going to lock the phone down so tight.

So basically nothing has been flashed with RSD.  I can guess why, but, perhaps you want to elaborate on exactly what steps you've taken to get to this point.

When RSD tries to open, Vista asks to allow, which I do. RSD briefly opens, but nothing appears to be done.

Then do it manually.  Open sdl.exe in the RSD directory, connect your phone in AP Fastboot mode to USB, then click the button with the ... on it in RSD, go to the MR2 directory, and select the SamuriHL_Downgrade.xml file.  Then flash away.  That's the manual version of step 2.

Ok, doing it manually worked. Thanks. If I chose to go back to the VW OTA, how is that done?

Now, I have Autorun Manager (used it in my Dx). Is there a tutorial for freezing the bloatware on a Maxx HD? I remember from experience you have to be careful on system apps, but not familiar with this phone.

Thanks again.

FWIW, another option, for folks who do not mind going through a full wipe, is to use Matt's Utility to downgrade to 9.16.6 update and root.  You can then protect root, accept the update and restore root.  I have done this twice on my Maxx HD.

I wouldn't mind this option, as I just want root back.  Is this still possible even after the update to 9.18.79 XT926 & with bootloader locked?  I thought Matt's Utility shouldn't be used after the update.

I lost my Root when I got my new Droid Razr.  I used these instructions and I am back rooted.  But now I can not load any ROMS since I still have a locked bootloader?  Is that correct?

You can only load roms that were designed to be flashed with Safestrap. So at this point, pretty much every AOSP based rom is out as you're not able to flash kernels (boot.imgs). There are several Blur/Stock based roms though that will still work on Safestrap.

It's possible to use a combo of the utility and RSD to rollback your OTA before the update to get root, though BL can never be unlocked.

Atm I'm working out a way to call service from an APK, If I can get PatchRom to work with Blur base it should be flashable even with a locked bootloader, so It's only a matter of calling Shelld

Ports based on Stock can also likely be flashed without an unlocked BL, so It's not like development is dead, people will have to get creative though

Here's a solution for people who bought a phone with an OTA already on it, a microwave and return policy

Haha, I told my wife I was planning on breaking mine to return it, but then I figured with my luck the new one would have the update anyway. If nothing else I... again... learned the hard lesson of don't blindly update ANYTHING.

No, the current XT926 ones from Verizon Stores do NOT have the update currently, you need to make a decisive move right now to get it

Another Satisfied Customer! Brilliant, easy...thoughtful.

I should have read the threads before I OTA'ed. A well...root is all I really need. Backups, telnet, busybox, etc.

Many thanks!

Any idea if the root protection scheme will survive new OTA's?

Blackice
