So to clarify, am I unable to install my own work because I got a phone with the latest OTA update enabled?

Did you unlock your phone when that option was available?

I just 'got' it today and it was OTA'd when I got it.

But I have 9 days left on my return policy for the XT926, It is Locked and has a Locked bootloader w/ the latest & 'greatest' OTA update I assume...

If there are any developers who would like me to set up a VMware so they can use Teamviewer for experimentation on this phone let me know, I do not really care If it gets destroyed or not since It is not usable in this state anyway

You can root it, but, there is no unlock and probably never will be.  Unfortunate.

Thanks the update worked great, pretty easy to follow. Being that I have rooted 2 phones and like to follow directions exactly as i read them, the filename SamuriHL_Downgrade-RAZR_HD should be renamed to reflect the SamuriHL.xml.zip  in the instructions. Great job though, I am glad you guys were able to put this together so quickly.

I'll update the OP.  I don't think it's linked to my new version.  But I'm glad it worked for you.

Ok, I cleaned up the OP a bit.  The big download link is to my latest tool.  Then I cleaned up the manual steps, as well.

OK folks, It's possible to roll your OTA back even with a locked unrooted 9.18.79 phone, trying for root/further rollbacks now..

We know.  :)  It's been tested which is why these scripts are here.  But you can't unlock.  Once the update is taken, it updates the TZ partition (trusted zone) and permanently patches the security hole that allowed the unlock.  The TZ partition can't be rolled back even on unlocked phones.

But theoretically another hole could be found correct? Although my guess is that since the people that unlocked it in the first place have their unlocked, there may not be a reason for them to try. But thanks for all the work on getting the unlucky few (myself included) that blindly updated without unlocked phones.

Dan has stated he has no desire to continue looking for root and unlock exploits.  He's enjoying "retirement" so I'd not expect him to even try.  If others want to follow in his footsteps, he's posted all his work online so people have a starting point.  I'm a software engineer and I'll tell you right now, I'm not capable of doing it.

Beyond that, Dan has already taken a look at the tz.mbn and bootloader from the new build and did not find any vulnerabilities.

He just can't help himself, can he?  LMAO!  That's not unexpected that there's no vulnerabilities in it, though.  After all it IS the "trusted zone".  Not very trustworthy when there's a gaping security hole to do the one thing it's supposed to prevent.  :D

How much of the 9.20.1 update is installed when running the script?

None.  I used the 9.18.79 update instead.

What am I doing wrong?

nvd1f9.png

I am trying to root a locked bootloader xt926 and it looks like all of the files are pushing to the device just fine but I am getting a "failure" message at the end.

Do I need to re-flash the phone in RSD before trying to root it again?

Phone is running 9.18.79 software.

EDIT: I am guessing that the phone needs to be wiped and rolled back before rooting and updating?

Thanks man I actually figured it out, I didn't do the MR2 downgrade because I didn't know that it was required. I thought that it was going to wipe my phone but it didn't :p.
