Make sure you're using the original cable the came with the phone and try a different USB port.  Losing connection to the phone is not a problem with the root process but a symptom of an issue with how your phone is connected to your PC.

I tried again and this time it worked but I dont know which of the 3 things I did may have helped...

1.  I uninstalled SuperUser before trying again

2.  I plugged my USB cable into a different USB port

3.  I had a couple of "root apps" installed already so I would be ready once I was rooted.  These apps were Voodoo Root Keeper, Open Garden Wifi Tether, and Stickmount USB drive reader.  I uninstalled all 3 before trying again.

4.  Then I rebooted the device after doing these 3 things then launched the run.bat batch file.

Dont know which thing helped if any but I thought I would share in case it helps someone else.  Thanks guys for making such an easy root utility!

Glad you got it. :)  If I had to guess I would say it was the USB port change. We have seen this happen before....

My experience was the that superuser already existed. Glad it worked for you.

Awesome.  Glad you got it working. Since it was disconnecting the phone mid-exploit I'm guessing the usb port, as well but whatever makes it work is the right solution.  :)

OP updated with motochopper 1.2.  It now includes an updated script for Mac/Linux (thanks tECHIDNA and LivingInKaos).  It now has the ability to help those where the script fails due to old remnants of su kicking around on the system partition.  Just drop the system.img.ext4 file from the FXZ in the system dir and it'll flash it for you as part of the process to give you a clean start on rooting.

From a quick look at the script, it appears this will only work for 64bit OSX. If thats the case Sam, you may want to put that into the OP....just a thought.

Also, the filesize for your fastboot.osx is way different than the ones I have from Matts various utilities. Regardless of whether its the 32 bit version or 64 bit version, which is kind of interesting.

Beats me.  I didn't update the Mac/Linux script.  That was done by another member and I simply borrowed it from the RAZR M version that was updated.

Yea, it's entirely possible.  I don't own a Mac so I'd not be able to check it either way.  Is Darwin 64 bit only?

Linux stuff I can do.  I wrote a Mac/Linux version of the HoB.  I just didn't get around to dealing with it for Motochopper.  :)  Mac, well, I can't test that.  Hell, honestly I can't test any Moto stuff anymore.  LOL

I just sent mine to another developer who will hopefully be taking over for me in the Moto world once he gets his feet back in the game.  :)

No Darwin can be either..here is the platform check from Matts utility:

if [ "$platform" = 'Darwin' ] && [ "$bit" = '64' ]; then
adb="./adb.osx"
fastboot="./fastboot.osx"
version="OS X"
mode="'Charge Only' mode"
echo "64 bit Mac System"

elif [ "$platform" = 'Darwin' ] && [ "$bit" = '32' ]; then
adb="./adb.osx"
fastboot="./fastboot.osx32"
version="OS X"
mode="'Charge Only' mode"
echo "32 bit Mac System"

Thanks Sam, really appreciate that. My joke was an inside one directed toward Kaos. :)

Oh so it's fastboot that's 64 bit.  Hmm, ok.  The HoB uses the same logic as Matt's util.  Probably should have stopped being lazy and stolen that from the HoB and added the binaries.
