Android Software Upgrade News

Thank you for being a Motorola Mobility customer. We know you value having the latest and greatest technology on your device. We are working very closely with Google and our carrier partners to bring you the best possible experience on each of our devices powered by Android. This means ensuring that all upgrades and updates enhance device functionality and provide an overall improved experience.
As previously communicated, DROID RAZR, DROID RAZR MAXX, DROID 4, DROID BIONIC, DROID XYBOARD 8.2 and 10.1, and MOTOROLA XOOM WiFI + 3G/4G will be upgraded to ICS. Additional details on timing for these products will be shared at a later date.
To help our customers understand the steps we go through to develop an upgrade, we are describing the high-level process for delivering upgrades below. During this process, we work to ensure that an upgrade is possible, and that it provides a satisfying experience. For each smartphone or tablet currently in the market, you will see updated information on what stage the upgrade plan is in.
* Please note this timing is Motorola Mobility's best estimate and contingent on successful completion of testing.
Motorola Mobility Upgrade Development Cycle

Every software upgrade or update for a device goes through several phases. These are: Posted Image
The duration of each cycle varies and in some cases is dependent on our carrier partners’ requirements. As our products complete each phase, we get closer to releasing upgrades and therefore we can provide a better estimate as to its availability.
  • PHASE 1 – EVALUATION & PLANNING: During this phase, we evaluate the benefits, technical issues and user experience of an upgrade. Generally, we are not able to provide release dates in this stage. There are also some cases in which we can state that an upgrade will happen but are not able to provide a release date. Please note that some products that enter the Evaluation and Planning phase may not complete the upgrade cycle.
  • PHASE 2 – DEVELOPMENT: This phase represents the development of the software upgrade. When a device is in the Development Phase, we will provide an estimated calendar quarter for its availability. This date and the development activities are subject to change.
  • PHASE 3 – TESTING: Testing is an important phase to ensure that an upgrade works properly and delivers an improved experience. Testing time may vary depending on the device and carrier requirements. Once a potential upgrade enters this phase, Motorola Mobility will provide the approximate month that we expect an over-the-air (OTA) upgrade to become available to consumers. Availability still depends upon completion of testing and certification by carriers or relevant authorities.
  • PHASE 4 – AVAILABLE: Once the upgrade is approved by the carrier or local regulators, Motorola Mobility will note on this site that the software is available. In most cases, consumers will receive a notification on their device that the OTA upgrade is available. An available upgrade or update may be rolled out over a period of time in order to best manage the deployment volume and experience. At times, a small testing group is provided the upgrade before it's made available to a larger group. On your Motorola Android Phone or Tablet, you can go to Settings ⇒ About Phone/Tablet ⇒ System Updates to manually check for an OTA upgrade. All estimated release dates are based on available information and are subject to change.
This page details plans for major Android software upgrades only. (Please

A note about Ice Cream Sandwich:
Motorola Mobility is able to provide the following guidance on Android 4.x (Ice Cream Sandwich, abbreviated as "ICS") upgrade availability based on where each product is in the Motorola Mobility Development Cycle described above.

Leaks from Verizon have led us to believe that the ICS OTA could be here as early as tomorrow.

Please Login or Register to see this Hidden Content

The leaked screenshots show the end of the testing phase being May 17th, and the OTA push on May 21st. It should be available for pull on the 23rd.

I am currently on 4.0.3 system version 6.14.79. with root of course. The OTA should be 4.0.4. We have seen leaks of the 4.0.4 but none of those builds have been sucessfully flashed back to Gingerbread.

I don't know about the CNET link. I haven't heard anything about soak test invites going out. Also, I think that update for the Xoom had been ready for a LONG time, which is why their testing went by so swiftly and the xoom could be updated so soon. I'm doubtful that it would be next week. But, who knows?

Maybe the soak started but only a very few users received it. They don't just announce there is going to be a soak. People get the email, they receive it, they test it and give feedback. After the whole speculated .181 soak fiasco they probably want to keep it VERY low key. Especially since they are behind they might even just skip the whole soak since they have had like 2 months of straight testing. NO ONE can be sure of ANYTHING at the moment.

True but going from Gingerbread to ICS, that's not testing that you can do ALL internal. You have to get that out to real world testers. If a soak had already started, we definitely would know about it.
