This is a simple (hopefully)  How-to free up space on your internal storage

This method should work with all devices that offer both internal storage and an external SD card, however, for the purposes of this guide, this walk through will be geared towards Safestrap Users.

Prereqs:

USB Cable

Latest Drivers for your device

A computer running Windows OS

About 20-30 minutes of your time

If using safestrap, MAKE SURE YOU ARE BOOTED INTO STOCK ROM FOR THIS....

Step 1.  Connect your phone to computer using USB cable, and select "MASS STORAGE" on your phone

Step 2. Create a folder on your computer to make your backup (I usually name mine SDCARDS_<current date>)

Step 3. Close the "autoplay" windows that typically pop up when you connect.

Step 4. Click Start button

Step 5. Click computer (or "my computer" if on XP)

Step 6. Right click on the storage you want to backup (windows will "see the internal and external storage as drives, and assign a drive letter

There are normally 3 new "drives" available one is MotoCast,(which will not be backed up) and the other two are your phone's storage(s)

You should be able to easily identify them by their size )

Step 7. Select "COPY" from the menu

Step 8. Navigate to the folder you created, open it, then Right click and select PASTE from the menu.

The reason for doing it this way instead of opening the "drive" and using copy/paste is that this way makes more of a complete copy,

meaning it will copy necessary hidden files as well

This will take some time depending on how much data is being copied

Now that that is done:

Step 9: Unplug your phone

Step 10. On your phone, go to Menu > System Settings > Storage

There you will find the option to erase internal storage

You will get a warning about losing all data

Step 11. Select Format Internal Storage

When that is finished, connect to your computer again. (in MASS STORAGE)

Step 12. Click on Start button....

Step 13. Click Computer (or MY COMPUTER for XP)

Step 14. Locate the Internal storage, double click to open it (you should only see a few files there now)

Step 15. Go back to the folder that you pasted your files to, find the Safestrap folder and right click on it, select "COPY" from the menu

Step 16. Go back to your open internal storage, right click inside the folder and select PASTE.....

We want to do the safestrap folder first simply because it contains your ROM slots. Without it, none of your ROMs will boot

If you have made backups using safestrap, they will be in a folder called TWRP.... it is not required to copy this to internal ( if it was there to begin with) They can be copied to your External storage (SD card)

Typically any music, movies, pics, etc can be placed on your external SD card so they will not use space on internal......

When you are satisfied with what you have copied (and the remaining free space) we'll move on to the next steps.

Step 17. Power off your phone

Step 18. Power the phone back on and boot into safestrap ... from there you will wipe cache AND dalvik cache ON ALL CURRENT ROM SLOTS

BEFORE REBOOTING NORMALLY

When that is done, fully boot into stock first (as a precaution) from here you can check to make sure everything is working properly

You should now have a considerable amount of free space on your internal storage.

Hope this guide helps anyone that is having issues with low internal storage. If you see anything wrong with the instructions, or would like to make a suggestion, please comment here!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Just last night I wanted to install a second Rom (in slot 2) but when I selected it and tried to active, nothing happened. That's when I noticed that the amount of storage needed was not enough. So I ended up wiping the current Rom slot 1 (which had Black Widow) and installed the downloaded Avatar Rom there. I went to bed wondering how I could free up the internal storage. I was going to Google the topic today but thought I would check this forum first. Glad I did!

I followed your instructions exactly and now I have over 6 gigs of available internal storage which should allow me to have a couple more Rom slots to play with.

One question I had (and if this is not the thread to ask, let me know what is the correct one) why do some Roms have to be installed in slot 1? Does it really make a difference? If so, it seems that this method would limit the choices of Roms that could be installed.

Glad you were able to free up a bunch of space.....

As far as the ROM slots.... I'm not totally sure about that...... that would be a question for the ROM dev(s) they may have more insight on that :)

Thanks. I reviewed several Roms that specified a certain slot for it to be installed in, not all in slot 1 though and it made me cautious about installing. That's why I started looking at switching Roms to other slots and found out I didn't have the storage. If I decide to install those Roms, I'll ping the dev'r to see why the specific Rom slot is stated.

No storage space. Is there a way to move apps to my SD card?

You can first follow this guide to free up as much as possible....... then if you need to....you can use the apptosd app (from the play store) to move the apps to external (sdcard) :)

I got it without any of this. The majority of space was being taken up by "micellanious". I long pressed it, and threw it in the trash.

So far all of my functions are fine.

Just because I am an idiot sometimes,  how do I know which drive is my internal?  I can switch between SDcard and SD-Ext and the files and folders are identical.  Is this normal?  I would assume SDcard is internal.  Lets say my drives are F and G.  Is it safe to say F is internal and G is external?  I think I can figure it out but before I get home and go to do this I thought if someone could definitely nail this down it would save me time.  Great post by the way.

Further more, how do I know what files to copy back. I know you said the SS folder but what else has to go back on to make everything work? I plan on wiping all my slots except stock and install my ROMs again. That way it will only put the files I need today on there.

Update: This step by step is perfect. I wiped internal last night without a glitch. Very happy I did. Much needed. Great job JTH

Stock will recreate the folder(s) that it needs on its own..... when you go to create new ROM slots.... safestrap folder will be updated as necessary ..... :)

So all-in-all.... you should be able to get away with putting only the safestrap folder back on and that's it :)

When I performed this process, I didn't transfer any other folders. The only thing I noticed is there were some games that didn't come back in (no biggie) and some video taken with my camera were gone. I didn't go back and copy the TWRP folder. Would it be a safe bet to say that's where they are, provided they were in the backup?

If you backed up your storages to your computer, then the video(s) and games(s) will be there.... :)

This worked perfectly for me. Thanks for putting it together! I didn't gain as much storage as I would have liked, but it's definitely an improvement.

If you copy those specific files back to the internal storage after backup and wipe then it should be ok.....

For example if the app XXX created a folder on internal called XXX then once you restore that file back to internal, it will "act" like it was never gone :)
