So djuniah recommended that I turn this into a topic in case anyone else has a similar problem.
I had RSD crash the other night during a rollback to 744, and ended up with system files that weren't complete/usable, and a battery that was too low for me to charge with a typical USB cable. I tried jury-rigging a new factory cord together so that I could flash directly, without battery charge, but found it much too difficult for my shaky hands. I ended up charging the battery with a severed usb cord directly, and it worked just splendidly.
The operation was pretty simple. I used my nail to separate the back cover along the edge. The back of the battery is glued to the case, unfortunately, so it takes some caressing to get it free. I used a taco bell gift card, sliding it underneath to separate the case from the battery.
Do not plug the USB cord in until all ends are carefully separated by electrical tape and kept safe from any conductive surfaces. Once the back is off, you'll notice that there is a small, pink, rubber cover over the battery's positive and negative terminals. Pop it off. Sever an expendable USB cable and strip back the red and black wires. Red is positive 5v, black is ground. Be very careful not to touch any exposed wires together, or to conductive surfaces. If you have a torx screwdriver, you can loosen the screws on the contacts and secure the wires underneath. I don't have a screwdriver that fits, so I used electrical tape to secure the wires to the terminals.
Allow the battery to charge, checking periodically to make sure it isn't overly warm and that the wires are touching the contacts correctly. Check charge every now and again by turning the phone on (I recommend unplugging it if you plan to move it around) and seeing if it says "Battery is ok, OK to program." Once it says this, you should have sufficient charge that RSD will allow you to flash again.
When flashing, be extra super patient. My phone decided to bootloop on the final reboot step of RSD, so I rebooted manually into the fastboot menu, then into recovery, where I wiped data. Bootup went fine after this. Good luck, and remember there's (almost) always hope left.
Thanks to knghts50 for getting me on the path to this solution, and to the remaining handful of you guys who helped assuage my concerns over the undertaking.

Nah, I was coming from 173 back to 744, but had RSD fail on the first run. Couldn't charge with no system files.

This is a very useful tidbit of info, and to add, if you are unsure which battery terminal is + or - you can buy a $10 digital volt meter from Radio shack and touch the leads to the bat, if you have the positive lead on the negative bat terminal the number on the screen will have a - next to it.
