It seems that the 'slot' in the trees/brush I thought might be a landing zone for the tower was only the first pass at clearing off the whole east side of the hill. Not much left up there.

Today I rode along with the Fire Marshal to a different vantage point to watch a shot. The charges were set along a ridge paralleling and very close to the freeway and we drove in behind a warehouse on the opposite (south) side of the freeway. Unfortunately, we couldn't see when the freeway traffic stopped and couldn't hear the warning horn so I didn't have the camera ready when the shot went off. Somehow they are always able to 'direct' the blast so no debris flew out onto the highway...tying up traffic for cleanup with all the NASCAR haulers and fans coming to town would NOT be a good thing.
There have been as many as six people up on the new tower the last few days and I watched the coax cable being pulled up to the VZW racks today. Decision has apparently been made to leave the old tower online till after race weekend and I'm hearing it might be September before it comes down.

The drill on the left is where the shot was yesterday.

Today they've started clearing the area. I noticed there are 3 drills at work in the same area, but there won't be any more shots that require freeway closure until next Monday.

Oh, I get it now...they're going to get rid of the old tower by dissolving it from the top down!
Oh, wait...it's just fog.

Found another vantage point to see what's going on. This is from north of Lee Hiway looking down on the creek that runs between the old tower hill (to the right) and the former RV campground and trailer park.

They've been building up this area to the right.

Left of the creek has also been built up and is the route the ready-mix trucks use to reach where they are 'boxing in' the creek bed.

They've used a diversion pump for any storm runoff and blue piping takes it way down past the site to dump into Beaver Creek which flows through both Bristols and eventually past the race track.

Two concrete 'boxes' are on either side of the service road (with a culvert) used by the dump trucks to bring fill material from the hill to the east side of the creek.

The ready mix trucks can't drive to the next 'box' so a bucket loader with a hopper moves the concrete.

A crane and truck have arrived to remove the standby Cat diesel generator for AT&T to take to the new tower. They have 2 hour back-up batteries and that's all the window for them to move it and get it back online so this move means AT&T is fully functional on the new tower.

Back on the west side...they have dug out a large pit where the first shot by the Portajohn, can barely see the dump truck backed in to the bucket loader. They're also drilling again to the left and they've set charges across the road where the white pickup/camper is parked for later today.

I waited until this morning to learn that the dozer operator is ok before posting these pics. On my last pass around the site yesterday I noticed a group of guys standing along the bank this side of the rock wall and when I looked closer I could see the bottom side of the track on a Cat...not a normal view of same!
