I was able to move further into the site for awhile today as the Austin Powder folks set charges up above a knob sticking out on the south side of the remaining hill. Decided to do a vid panning around the site and to get the Before pic. Here's that vid...

Then the vid of the shot...

The crew (except for a couple service guys) is getting a 12 day break for the holidays and the Bakers decided to line up some of the equipment along I-81.

So, after a lengthy Holiday break and some nasty winter weather (for the south-west corner of Virginia) the crew is back at it today...

Two videos today, and even though there were two areas charged, one was below/behind the Cabelas retaining wall and I had to re-start since all the charges set on top didn't go off as expected. After you hear the first go off, watch close and there will be a small puff of dust on top.

Before and After of the charges not visible in the first video taken from inside the project.

Sooo...wife heard on the scanner that local PD was at the site this morning looking for a contact from Baker Excavating so I provided a cell number and learned that a Honda had been stopped with a ditch witch bucket in their trunk...stolen.

I learned today that the shot yesterday loosened up 30,000 cubic yards of material and it's all excellent rock, part of which will be run through the crusher system for several sizes of gravel. Some of the chunks are huge and they'll keep the hammers busy for days!

There are 3 loaders already working the long pile in that pic and the dozer on the left is digging a ramp for more...could probably fit 5 or 6 in there.

A full-out effort to remove the rest of the dirt overburden from on top this morning...3 loaders and their trucks, 2 dozers and a hammer. When the third drill moved up there the traffic jam looked like the GW Bridge w/ lane closures!

They carry powder in 5 gallon pails and here they're pouring into the hole drilled through the boulder. I learned today that this hole actually goes down 20+ feet below the boulder and the shot may not even crack the boulder!

The loader on the right and the dozer worked for an hour to carve a slot to move this big rock far enough to tip it over the edge.

Got a video of the shot this afternoon from the car lot...as the hill gets lower I'm kinda running out of good sight lines and may end up only getting Before and After still pics. No special rock breaking where they drilled through the boulder, but there's a fair sized 'Rock Fountain'!

The drills spent last Thurs and Fri up on the top of the remaining knob, so this morning I got some Before pics from inside, drove to the car lot when they started having the other equipment leave the site, took some Before pics from there.

As I sat there munching a cheeseburger (w/BACON!) waiting for the freeway traffic to stop...BOOM! Guess they decided it was far enough from the freeway not to bother traffic flow...so, no video.
