This is what I get when I press "Connect" after entering all of the information under the "Add Storage" on my phone.
"There is a problem in your network connection with remote host. Please repair your network connection and try again"
I have confirmed the computer and phone are on the same WiFi network and I have disabled 4G/3G on my phone. I also have tried restarting both devices, and starting the process over again.
I have tried wired / plugged in and the phone in "Media Device" mode and I have also tried unplugged.
Yes I have USB debugging enabled.
Any suggestions?
Run this command "sudo apt-get update" and try again.

Hmm, the dropbox link no longer works, error 404. Can it be fixed or is there an alternate location?

Amazing. Luckliy, I had ubuntu on a virtual box, made the whole process so easy. I felt like a child having his hand held through the whole process (in a good way). Nice work!

Thanks to Dan, marty45714 and the rest of the crew, finally I managed to root my XT910 UK retail JB by using marty45714's VM method.
First check
During the process I noticed that since the package was devised for Bionic it didn't include XT910 in USB filters. So I added that to the package and here's the modified "appliance package" (.ova file) you can download:
Also a few important points that might help in a successful rooting process:
1.when you start the assembly it may give an incompatibility error about your network interface, just click change network settings and let it automatically find your network interface. If you still think it is a wrong one, choose from drop down list. and then click ok.
2.Don't rush VM installation, let it install all drivers and create a working virtual network. if it is in the process of obtaining ip, let it finish first.
3.make sure you have all your motorola drivers for windows installed and working.
4.when you get instructions to connect your phone via usb, and connected your phone, make sure you give time to system to install drivers automatically, and if windows asked about drivers, choose an automatic driver installation. after this step is done proceed further.
5. finally don't miss the important step of pressing hardware button on your device, it happens very fast during reboot and you have to keep an eye for it.
6. all instructions will be given through terminal, just follow them. Good luck and happy rooting!

Currently this and the VirtualBox method are your only choices once upgraded to JB.

Thanks for this root method, it saved me!
I attempted to switch to the LATAM release from a verizon rom, and ended up with no root or recovery and my CID still wiped. I couldn't root with the other (razr blade) method because usb is disabled when booting from BPtools... It wouldn't even charge from a computer.
The first time didn't work, but after reading a post in this thread I waited longer after it vibrated to push the button, and then longer again before hitting enter afterwords. Not sure if that's what did it, but it worked

What do you mean by LATAM release? That's not a term I've heard yet
