Doesn't the entitlement hack remove that problem?

I don't know if it works for anything but the WiFi hotspot...but I figure it's worth a look, yes?

There's always the option of running CM or AOKP and having tethering work natively with the ROM too. Not to mention a better version of JB with more options to customize and less VZW bloat crap

Very good point I didn't consider.

That's still my biggest argument for not bothering to take the OTA and root it with this method. I have no need for a stock JB build because I don't run the stock slot ever

The entitlement hack enables BT, USB, and WiFi (assuming but I never use this)! I can confirm that BT and USB tethering work! Thank you Samuri for telling me about that!

I couldn't figure out why this doesn't want to work on my xt910.
If this helps somebody...
UBUNTU 12.04 has some problems mounting phone and connecting to Samba. 12.10 worked fine for me.
Thanks Dan

So as they say, I know just enough to be dangerous with things like this. I had been running a stock ICS and was fairly happy with it. When I updated to JB my Bionic became very sluggish so I was hellbent on rooting and rom'ing to make it run better.
Today I was able to root it. But in my ignorance I installed bootstrap which, apparently, is the wrong thing. Id used bootstrap long ago when rooting so I didnt know that it was bad news. My phone is now stuck in the encryption boot. Help?? And I have very limited RSD experience, which is what it appears I need to use to recover from my blunder. So please explain in laymans terms.
Much appreciated.
edit - luckily I have my sons old Bionic to use as he just upgraded to the Galaxy Note 2. So Im not stuck without a phone. And no, I dont intend on doing this again with his old one. This phone is still on ICS, fresh install, and is rooted already.
House of Bionic with JB FXZ, Keep Data option. Read EVERYTHING before using it.
You sir are nothing short of a genius. Ran the HOB with the jb_fxz and my original phone is back in action. Now...should I attempt to root again?
I was able to root initially, then I installed bootstrap and killed it. If I root, can I install safestrap and Im good to go?

SAFESTRAP, yes. No bootstrap as it's not compatible with JB....as you probably noticed.

I am working on a how to video will post when I am done
Edit
Finished Video here
Hope this helps some of the noobs out.
I think I messed up my laptop.
After I tried rooting using Ubuntu from the livecd my laptop will not boot into win7 now. It is as if the video card died, just a black screen. I can't even get into bios, or boot with the livecd or a win 7 repair disk.
Any suggestions.?
edit/update: fixed

I THINK I FRIGGEN LOVE YOU!!!
Sorry for my outburst, but this worked PERFECTLY on my Australian-bought RAZR V (XT885). I *knew* there was a reason I kept Ubuntu knocking around on my computer!
Thanks a billion!

I fxz'd to start fresh and everything went great, except that Superuser needs to update the binaries and it fails. I have seen this problem posted earlier and it suggests to follow this thread at XDA,
, but I do not see firmware for the US region or how to repair the issue. I am a super noob, but I have made it this far and would like to complete the process since I am so close. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Edit / Update: Installed the exploit a few more times trying different hardware keys and waiting different lengths of times and now Superuser is installed and working. I now have root. Thanks again

Moderator,
I spent the weekend working on something really lightweight to get this done easily, and I've finally got it working and ready.
Using Oracle VirtualBox with a Tiny Core Linux VM, I've managed to get this down to a 46 MB download.
Everything is automatic... helps the user get connected to SMB, then helps with getting connected with USB debugging before running the exploit.
I spent most of the entire weekend tweaking with Tiny Core Linux to get this ready. Please share. Where's the best place to start a new thread to get the word out about this?
Here are the steps:1) Install Sun VirtualBox on your Windows PC.2) Download the VirtualBox .ova file here:dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/bb53ayj5c3nd5ie/Root_Bionic_JB.ova?token_hash=AAGSOYfPuDXTur_e9qlYl2JRERovPyfMwe-2xNzHXg4Lxg&dl=13) Import the .ova file into VirtualBox. (Click "File" then "Import Appliance".)4) Start the imported VM in VirtualBox (Click the big "Start" Button. It has a green arrow icon.)5) Follow the instructions on the Linux console.
Link is Dead. Can Anybody plz reupload it/
Thanks in Advance

anyone can confirm whether a wifi tethering could work?
I have setup a linux box (with samba). It's been connected to a router.
The Bionic surely will wifi connect to the router.
Will this connection work to replace the "usb" method (neither the router nor the linux box has a usb port)?

No you need both WIFI and the USB connection for the exploit to work.
The WIFI to set up the samba share and USB to push and run the exploit.

I tried to connect the Bionic to my Pogoplug Debian box via USB and followed the steps in the OP.
then I got error as:
root@debian:/tmp/share# ./run.sh

./run.sh: line 49: ./adb.linux: cannot execute binary file
[+] Please press any hardware button on your phone.
[+] Don't worry if the phone is unresponsive at this time.
[+] The device will vibrate when the exploit is complete.
[+] Press enter to continue once the device has vibrated.
I tried to put device as "Massive Storage" and "MTP", either case have the same error.
Can anyone advice what's the reason?
In my understanding, there lacks the steps of installing the driver for the "debug" purpose.
Thanks in advance.
