Ok Gurus, I've read all the pages on this exploit and am just a wee bit confused, so here are my questions:

1. it looks like you have to have a wifi network connection for both the PC and Bionic for samba to work, right?

2. being someone that lives in the sticks and not having wifi, will using the hotspot on a different phone work (not sure yet if it will allow multiple users)?

3. I think I saw somewhere that I can download the exploit, unzip the files and put them into the samba share to run without having to download them, is this right?

I haven't even taken the JB update yet and I've been playing with HoB so I'm pretty sure my root is protected since I did some testing last weekend but I want to cover ALL my bases and try to learn something at the same time!

Thanks Kaos, Sam and all you other "experts" for everything you do!

I hope this helps some people. I used 12.10 in ws 9 and it worked perfectly so maybe give it a try if you're having issues. Just remember that in vmware you have to tell it to disconnect the bionic from the host so the vm can use it.

Sam I want to throw together all the files needed for this. Think these will be the best way to go brother? I'm going to start cranking out everything for JB (once again creating my own mirrors so i know they'll never be down) and get my threads running at full capacity for JB only.

Since I gave my Bionic to a member in need I honestly don't have a reason to run or install any of this so I just want to grab solid copies and do a full update all at once. That way I know my threads are set with working links for the upcoming year+.

I'm now realizing I should have just hit you up on gtalk.

3. Yes, you can do that.

Yes, I think a vmplayer vm would rock.  Hardware independent and easy to set up.  I'd love to see that.

I think the problem with using the hotspot might come when you physically connect the phone via usb - won't that kill the hotspot?  I'm in the car, so I can't test that.

One of the first things I did when I got my netbook 3yrs ago was to look at putting chrome on...it wasn't ready for primetime so I dual boot Win/Unbutu...once we can dual boot android/Unbutu then life will be well.

I just had a crazy ass thought.  I may try it later.  I'll faint if it works. :D

EDIT: If anyone's crazy enough to try it before I get to.....

On a ROOTED Android device that is NOT your Bionic, install one of the various samba servers on the play store.  Set up the share.  See if that works for rooting the Bionic.  I was thinking, for example, my Xoom.  I have *NO IDEA* if it'll work.

Timmy is my mentor so yes.  :)  I just think it'd be an interesting thing to test.  I mean hell, if that works, those who have multiple Android devices in the house may not have to deal with setting up linux to get this to work.

Not sure.  The FXZ (fastboot file) should contain all the partitions for your phone within it.

another dumb question that just occurred to me, if I boot from a live CD or USB will I have the drivers to make the laptop connect to WIFI? would it be better to bit the bullet and try to set up a VM on this thing? It's a fairly strong laptop with 8 Gb of memory but it's also running windows 8 which I'm learning as I go and the OS seems to create it's own issues when trying to do things.

I just used a VM.  It's up to you which way you go.

I booted from Ubuntu 12.10 Live CD and was able to use the Wifi drivers supplied.  I did have to enable it in something like System Settings>Software Sources>Can't remember next tab but it was on the far right.

The newer Ubuntu should have what you need for wifi

- just my two cents here, but if you mess around at all with your Bionic and there is going to be a relatively great chance that you will need to root again, I would set up the VM.  That way, you are all set, ready to go.  If you go USB, then later use the USB for something else, you will have to set it up all over again.  LiveCD sounds much the same situation.
