SirEagle you need to start the live installation again. Are you running from a DVD or usb drive?
If DVD I do not think that is going to work as there is no place to install samba to begin with. It has to be on a USB live drive per the instructions.

I used DVD r/w...

- the hole into the right permissions is thru the remote storage folders. The only way to get that to work is to connect to a server so the files end up migrating and commands run thru the connection

Thank you Kaos. So basically, its "only" the most important reason that this exploit works?

Just part of the equation. If you saw the pwn code, you would see the important magic :)

Early on when I ran "sudo apt-get install samba" it wasn't available and I had to run "sudo apt-get install samba-common-bin smbclient samba common" instead.

That's bad.  You installed the samba client but not the server.

Ah you need the samba server package.

Try installing samba again.

sudo apt-get install samba

Unfortunately for me, I wouldn't even know what I was looking at. Just getting into the whole dev arena now - and haven't graduated to android-based programming...

With the 12.4 and newer, it shouldn't matter between 32 and 64 as it should be multi arch. I think the main thing is doing the updates if on 12.4. Mine wouldn't work until I did them either on 12.4

I used the 64bit Ubuntu 12.10 and it wouldn't find the files to push. Got the Directory not found crap. in post #104 of this thread the guy listed this command to enter in the terminal .....sudo apt-get install lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 lib32bz2-1.0 lib32asound2 lib32stdc++6

once i ran that and it installed the 32bit drivers i ran the ./run.sh and BOOM installed in like 4 seconds and rebooted my phone and all was perfect. This after 3 hours of why isn't it finding the damn files!

when I try to install I get:

Reading package lists... Done

Building dependancy tree

Reading state information... Done

Package samba is not available, but is referred to by another package.

This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or

is only available from another source

However the following packages replace it:

  samba-common-bin smbclient samba-common

Needs to have a place to launch from and part of the exploit method.

Plus it does not work from windows, period per the source!

By the way, Hades, I appreciate your reply however it did not adequately fulfill the degree of my curiosity.

Launching locally is not always required. It being part of the exploit is only for this exploit, and I never said anything about Windows.

I was only trying to better understand the basis of all of this in hopes to be able to help someone else down the road. I apologize if my question offended you.

Not to burst your bubble entirely, but I did a successful root on my JB Bionic using a 12.04 32-bit LiveDVD of Ubuntu. It still managed to do package updates and install samba so the exploit could be performed. I didn't install Ubuntu whatsoever on my machine. I just booted the disc and clicked "Try Ubuntu" so the live version could run.

I'm rooted on 12.04 LTS.  Make sure you update first. I was having issues (no errors).  It would go through the whole process just fine with no errors and no root.  After updating the OS, it worked first time.

apt-get update

more than likely you wouldn't have had to bother with sudo apt-get update if had just gone with 12.10 instead of the 12.04 LTS

Amazing work here. Cant thank you enough for this root method. Worked great on my 64bit distro, with the 32bit libs. I will throw some moneys towards a good cause on your behalf.

Regardless of the version you choose, it is a good idea to run apt-get update to make sure you are current. For the brief moment it takes to run through, it's worth it IMO.
