Sounds good. I'll give it a try when I get home. It's soccer night so I probably won't be able to test it out a whole lot until 8:00 or so. I'll post my results afterwards (from oldest to newest - this time).

Finally got mine to work! You were right, I was in 64-bit Ubuntu. When I downloaded Ubuntu 32-bit, I simply extracted the .iso and ran the setup application, but this would read that my system was 64-bit and therefore install 64-bit Ubuntu version 12.1 instead of the 32-bit version. So I redownloded the 32-bit Ubuntu 12.1 and made a bootable usb drive, booted from usb drive and choose to left option (someting like test drive) not install. From there I followed the instructions and gained root after running the last command twice (first time didn't work for what ever reason). Thank you so much!

I'm trying to root XT910 Retail.en.EU. But without luck for now.
Could it be caused by using of my Gentoo amd64 instead of 32bit Ubuntu? Is the version of server (or some configuration) important? Or I should to do Factory reset?
After final reboot, Superuser application tells me, that there are old binaries, but the update fails without any log message :-(

You need to run 32 bit Ubuntu

Sweet Leaping Willikers, I've got Root! I'm guessing it was the password the whole time. Maybe it was too long?. My original password was made up of 11 characters long - 1st 7 were letters, last 4 were numbers. After Samuri's response, I used a 4 character password instead (all letters) and worked without a hitch! It's funny how it's the little things that bite you, I guess...
Thank you, Sam (and all others too) for the words of wisdom & patience granted to all us Noobs.
My pledge was honored in a previous post, but again I say to you, Dan: THANKS FOR MAKING THIS POSSIBLE!!!
On a related note, can anyone point me to the "expert-approved" next steps for ensuring that I don't have to worry about losing 'su' in the future?

I have a quick question. I do not have internet access at my house because it was crap and not worth paying for. We just have our 2 droids and use foxfi for the laptop and desktop. I was trying to think how to do this. I have a router that I assume I can connect to with the phone and laptop for whole wifi sharing part. But when you are entering the linux codes, is it downloading and pulling more stuff from the internet? If so can this be done a head of time while I am at work up until the point I connect my phone? Because if I am connect to the router(which won't have internet) I am not going to be able to connect to foxfi at the same time and I don't know if the usb tethering is going to work with ubuntu. Sorry for my noobness..

You can download the package ahead of time and extract the files, then instead of doing the linux download code, just move the files into the shared directory and continue from there. There is nothing magic about that part.

**So ive always held out on adding a donate link because this is just something i do for enjoyment.. but i have received a few requests recently to add one.. so if you enjoy my work and would like to buy me a beer or put some gas in my car, that would be very much appreciated.. but please continue to freely enjoy my mods without any feeling of obligation what-so-ever.. the last thing i want by adding this is for people to stop using my mods because they fell obligated.. Thanks

if anyone is still having trouble with this process I can't tell you how much easier it is to use a Mac for SMB. Go and borrow someone's mac turn on SMB file sharing and you're halfway done.

ROFLMAO! You know I'm just giving you a hard time. I wouldn't have made a Linux/Mac version of the HoB if I didn't think Mac users deserved some love, too.

Maybe this would be a good time for me to create a thread teaching members who are interested ,on how to set up a simple Linux environment.
Also your donation is greatly appreciated, every little bit counts for those folks.
