My phone comes from HK and flashed into Australian ICS before JB OTA started. Is this a problem?
I have NO idea.

I have NO idea.
A new problem: I think I've accidentally erased the CID as I've discovered that my phone will reboot into fastboot mode even after normal shutdown.
That's what it's showed.

so now i'm using the vm with ubuntu 12.10 32bit version everything is working well, but the i have the same problem as i had with the live usb. (device isn't detectet)
My ubuntu is fresh so just install. I just did the steps which are explained step by step. Maybe i have to install drivers or stuff like that that the adb is reconized by the vm.... don't know. I have checked it .the vm finds my phone...

Uhhhhhh, that can't be good. I would recommend trying to flash the 98.72.22 FXZ and see if you can get it booting again. I've never seen the device is locked message before. Yikes.

The phone is in the right mode? USB Debugging enabled? MTP mode set? All that wonderful jazz?

Actually the phone can be rebooted by entering BP tools...
And my phone is a XT910 but not Bionic

ugh so I'm trying this on my laptop but seems its a non-pae cpu. Anyone know which Linux kernel will work? If not guess I need to wait till I get home and use my Desktop.

If your windows machine recognizes the phone, the VM should as well - just not at the same time. Is it that the device is connected to your windows environment? There is a button to push in the upper notification bar of the VM to connect it to the VM instead.
Edit - I see that you say it sees it

MTP mode and yes...why would you change it mid-exploit?

Thank you Dan. I sent you a donation of $15.00. It's not a whole lot, but it's a "thank you" for your time in getting root back for the Bionic. (Dirtysanchezzzz1)

Took me a couple runs at it but have successfully rooted!
My issue was that it looked like it successfully completed the first time, but only had installed the apk and not the su in /system/xbin. So, uninstalled apk from apps on phone and reran with success.
One other note...I ran from an Ubuntu 12.04 install that I don't use very often, so I needed to run "sudo apt-get update" in order to get the samba install to work.

Well, now. This is amazing.
I've followed each and every step around 10 times now, trying with the 32-bit Linux distro. linked in the OP. Each time everything goes perfectly, takes about the expected amount of time and Motoshare tells me everything is done, but for some reason the phone never actually roots. To ensure I covered all of the bases I even factory reset the phone to remove any older .apk builds hovering about in storage, but still no root.
The OS is detecting the device with no problems, everything copies and runs, but it just won't root.
Any advice?

Yes, show us the output of it running so we can actually SEE what's going on and help you.

So, I've figured out why linux didn't recognize my droid, it looks like some modules needed to be inserted.
did the job for me
now I just have the problem that the root didn't apply even though everything went fine.
Gonna look through the thread again
