Whats not working?
Both camera and ffc appear to work fine for me.

Agreed, both of my cameras work, including the Face Unlock feature.

I've run out of ideas and searched everywhere to try and regain root so I going back to 173 than reinstalling ICS and hope VooDoo does the job......

btw, I did have a data drop this morning while on ICS. I had to reboot to get data going again.

edit: after second install and starting from clean 173

voodoo didn't restore root, I have SU but it says device is not rooted.

any other ideas on how to get root back for ICS?

Make sure u back up & protect root BEFORE UPDATE!!!! w voodoo. This link can tell u how to fix if voodoo doesn't restore root after ICS update takes. Try voodoo 1st & reboot. Then try this if no go. No need 2 go back to stock.

Anyone having issues where you cannot set a screen lock type? After I change it to pin or face unlock I need to reboot the phone for it to take, then once it, it reverts back to slider....not too secure.

The RAZR doesn't use traditional FXZ files. They include kernel information allowing us to roll back completely.

Thanks arcanexvi. I'm guessing that the Android SDK can't be used to create a .fxz file that would include a custom kernel?

that did it! I have root again! Thanks all!

terminal commands
  • /system/su-backup
  • mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/system /system
  • cp /system/su-backup /system/bin/su
  • Exit terminal & reboot.

This worked like a charm! It wouldn't load the update at first, about 1/3 of the way through it would show an exclamation mark in a triangle and reboot with no changes. Oddly enough, I had a completely stock and rooted system with no other changes except my own apps. However, in a desperate attempt to get this to work, I used Matt's utility to restore .173 and tried it again and it went through first try without a hitch! Not a single issue so far, I'm loving it! The best part about it is: Chrome Beta :D

Here is a weird one, Rom Manager (free) does not boot into recovery, it just reboots the phone when I select the .zip.

I flashed back to 744 and OTA'd to .173

I did a factory restore. When the reboot happens the .zip file disappears from cache and I have to copy it back. Any ideas?

I am having the same problems I have tried numerous times, also tried uninstalling rom manager then reinstalling still no luck.

Tried several times and had no success restoring root. RSD'ing back to .744 >OTA>OTA> Root>follow guide in OP did it for me. WOOT! Strange that flashing back with Matt's utility wouldn't do it.

I just saw the torrent has different directions:

1) Be pure stock 6.12.173.XT912 (RSD/Fastboot with wipes if you have to. I don't feel like dealing with upgrade failures)

2) Drop the file on your EXTERNAL SD card

3) Boot into moto recovery (with the phone off, hold both volume keys and the power button, volume down to recovery, volume up to select. when you get to the exclamation hit both volume keys to get to the menu)

4) Select install

5) Select the zip file you dropped on the SD card

6) Wait (Impatiently)

7) Profit

Doesn't work

Do not use this method unless you want to brick your phone. I tried it and I had to restore via AP fastboot to get my phone working again.

The method on this thread works. I got the same errors the first time I tried it. You have to use Matt's utility to restore back to .173. I canceled set up for accounts except google, since you have to download OTA Rootkeeper from the market. Next, I installed ES File Explorer, ROM Manager, and Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. I then used the utility to root the phone. That's as far as I touched the stock system. Use ES File Explorer to copy the 2 torrented files to /cache. Be sure to load the .zip from the /cache folder, NOT the SD card. If you follow this and the OP instructions, you should be good to go.
