That root exploit was patched. You now need to root via custom recovery.

. Cheers

Oh wow, so, the very patch that I referenced was distributed to kill the exploit that I'd used to root my razr? sad. Thanks for the link to the fix!

Unfortunately that link to the fix will not help you because you have to have an unlocked boot loader to root now.

I was just discovering that. actually, I'm ok with the phone the way it is now, but I'm really confused as to why the apps I froze with TB are still frozen after I lost root. truth is, I know this phone will eventually get 4.2.2 (tho I'm not holding my breath) and then I'm hoping someone will figure out a way to root without unlocking the bootloader. I've rooted and unlocked my previous 3 phones (the last one being the rezound with a wire!), and I only rooted this one to get TB and freeze the crapware verizon requires me to keep. I'd rather not go down that whole unlocking road with this phone. if anyone can explain why TB has kept those apps frozen after I lost root, I'd love to know.

thanks all!!

It's very unlikely that a new root exploit will be found for this phone.  It's possible, but, I put the odds at slim to none.  Maybe you'll get lucky and whatever they find for the S4 will work on this, too, but, I wouldn't hold my breath.

sorry for the rant.

do we know whether these patches are coming from/demanded by verizon or motorola? It baffles me why a company would go to the trouble of releasing a patch that closes a loophole that had let a user root a device. if I buy a computer, I can do whatever I want with it. I paid full retail for this phone, to keep unlimited data. I know what I had to do to unlock the bootloader on my previous devices, and even then, I installed a ROM that someone else kindly developed. If I want to accept the 'official' updates that trickle down to my phone, I have to keep the ROM it ships with. rooting let me disable the ridiculous bloatware that verizon forces us to keep (zappos? golf? vz navigator?). I'm sure I'm repeating what hundreds of users have said already, so again, sorry for the rant.

If you paid full retail price you really should have got the development edition. Officially unlockable which means you don't need exploits for root.

thanks all. there's no dev edition of the maxx hd, only the hd. but back to one of my original questions: can anyone explain why the apps I froze with TB are still frozen, even tho I lost root?

Because they're already frozen.  You need root to freeze/unfreeze them.  Losing root doesn't automatically defrost them.

Just losing root won't un-freeze apps that were previously frozen with TiBu.... only TiBu can un-freeze them....

Not sure if it can unfreeze them without root.  How awesome is that?

thanks. I hope this will be my last post, sorry for all the bother, but I hope that other people in my situation will read this and understand the details. I want to make sure I understand this correctly:

  • I had root with the previous version of 4.1.2 on the maxx hd
  • the exploit that had allowed me to get root on that version has now been patched, and I lost root.
  • in order to gain root again, I would have to unlock the bootloader or have had it already unlocked previous to this update (I've read posts from people who say that this update did not kill their root, and I assume that means they had unlocked their bootloader prior to the update).
  • unlocking the bootloader now requires a tricky operation that 'blows a fuse' (that's what I've read) in the phone and is only reversible if I send the phone to motorola.
  • apps that I had previously frozen with TB will remain that way, but in order to freeze others or unfreeze the frozen ones I will need root.
  • assuming I don't do anything further to my phone, a complete factory restore will work, and will make the phone 'sellable' if I decide to sell it.

again, a huge thanks for the information. I love this community and how much we help each other, and I hope my questions will help someone who stumbles into this thread facing the same problem I did.

You can restore the system to full stock again with the frozen app by using fastboot and flashing the system partition from the full XML.zip of the update which dropped a day or so after the OTA went live.

Edit: The full XML.zip is available at the following link.

Also, regarding rerooting after the update, check this post on XDA by realbbb:

If he is correct, and I absolutely believe him because he knows what he is doing, then the method he outlined should work.

I cannot verify that it does work because I already unlocked the bootloader on mine and simply flashed the custom recovery back after running the update and rerooted.

Someone needs to attempt this on a stock hardware locked device and see if it works.

In his typically brief and sparse style, he didn't add a lot of details and I find it difficult to believe that someone as savvy as he is did not immediately unlock the bootloader when he got the device.

Once you are unlocked there is no way to get back to stock as of yet right. Only reason would be to sell if ya wanted.

HUH? You can flash the FXZ on an unlocked phone to get back to stock no problem.

Would the phone get updates then? If it did you would have to know about unlocking. To know that
